“What the hell?” I ask, baffled. “Why do you walk around letting everyone believe that if-“
Evan cuts me off. “It’s been going on for a while- I don’t know!” he says, shrugging his shoulders. “It doesn’t get around to the people that matter.”
I’m so fucking dumbfounded right now, I can barely respond.
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
What a development!
“So what is going on then?” I ask when I can find words “-Between you and Ren?”
Evan rolls his eyes, letting out a small sigh. “I told you, we’re close,” he says, shrugging his shoulders. “I’ve known what she’s been saying. As long as it didn’t get detrimental, I didn’t see the point in making a big deal out of it to draw attention to myself. I’m not perfect, but I’m not doing that. It wasn’t worth it to bring it up! Plus, she trusts me. It's harmless gossip- until someone wants to make it a game.”
Is this man crazy? I feel like that could easily become detrimental!
“I don’t get it,” I say confused. I ignore his low-key shot at me; It's not going to change things, he's already had Jenalyn. She'll have him again if she wants him. “Is her trust really worth all of that? I mean, Evan! You should hear what she-“
He cuts me off with another shoulder shrug, his demeanor is so unaffected that it’s weird.
So… wow.
Ren isn’t sleeping with this guy, and now I am…
I’m not sure if this changes Jena’s plans at all. Does it make it better? Does it make it worse? Or pointless?
“Does she like you?” I ask as the question pops into my mind. “I can’t believe this. I just… don’t get it!”
Evan sighs, glancing at his watch.
“Hayden, I don’t know,” he says, his tone strained. “Can we move past this? ”
How does he expect me to move past this though? He has to know I’m beyond interested in this! He pointed out my feud with Ren the other day!
This conversation is not over.
“What about me?” I ask, “Why are you having sex with me then?”
He rolls his eyes, but it’s half-assed and rushed.
“So that had to do with your guy’s spat? The sex thing?” He says, again unimpressed. He shakes his head as if in disgust. “I should have known... That’s disappointing, Hayden.”
I’m not sure why I grow defensive when it’s already clear that he’s figured me out, but I do.
I'm sure it’s Jena.
Besides the confusion, she’s a little miffed about the turn of events. The fact that she isn’t treating her monster right now is enough to make us drop the subject.
“I never said that,” I say matter-of-factly.
I have to work hard to force Ren from my mind despite all the thoughts and questions still lingering. “I just want to know… why me?”
Evan stands to his feet, clapping his hands together before making his way back over to me.
“You presented me with an opportunity,” he says, quoting himself from the other day. “As a man, how do I say no?”
