But, just after she left the lot, she saw him. He was stood at the top of a ladder outside the Hawk, scrubbing at the same sign he and Tommy had vandalised.
"What on earth are you doing, Steve?" She asked him.
Startled by her voice, he took a second to steady himself before answering, "What does it look like I'm doing?"
She rolled her eyes, "Yeah, I can see what you're doing, I'm just confused as to why you're doing it".
"I wanted to help" Steve replied, shortly, turning his back on her and returning to cleaning the sign, "Go back to the others, I'm perfectly fine on my own".
"I'd rather not" She grimaced, leaning against the foot of the ladder. There was a movie theatre worker already stood there, but after offering to hold the ladder, he left.
She placed her hands on the rungs, "There. Now I can join in with your community service" She joked.
Steve looked down at her in surprise, "Wait, did something happen with Tommy and Carol?" He asked.
"Not with Carol, but Tommy" Lily shrugged, "He basically called me a slut for defending you" She scoffed.
Steve frowned, "A slut? Why?"
"Because your little brawl put him in a bad mood, that's why" Lily frowned back at him, and then she recalled her fight with Tommy to Steve, who listened to her closely.
"What an ass" He said, once she'd finished, "But thanks for sticking up for me. You're a star, Lily" He smiled, then he paused, "I'm sorry for acting like a total ass to you".
"Yeah, you were a total ass back there. I was only trying to help you" She frowned, and then she shook the ladder slightly, enough to make him grab onto it for balance.
"Stop it!" He protested, "If you're gonna do that, you can get the other guy back out to help me" He threatened, despite the smile that was beginning to form. Any grudge that either of them were planing on holding vanished.
"Sorry" She laughed, steadying the ladder, "But at least it made you smile. You've looked miserable all day".
It took Steve ten minutes to finish restoring the sign to how it had been before being vandalised. In that time, Lily had decided to continue talking to him, despite him saying several times he was concentrating on cleaning.
