There were only a handful of people scattered around the lawn, and a small group of boys larking around on the sidewalk. Lily sat down next to her friend and, not yet picking up on her glum expression, punched her playfully on the arm. Cindy ignored her and continued to stare straight ahead, now looking irritated.

"Hey, why aren't you inside? The party's not out here".

Cindy looked at her, "Funnily enough, I prefer it out here by myself" She said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Lily frowned, "What's up? Are you not having fun?"

"Nothing's up, I'm fine" Cindy replied, bluntly.

"Well, come back inside! I saw a game of beer pong being set up. Wanna be on my team?" Lily suggested, cheerfully.

"No thanks, I'd rather sit out here".

"Well, do you want a drink? Why didn't you have some of the punch? That'll put you in the party mood".

Cindy inhaled sharply, "No, Lily. I don't want a drink".

"Why not? You haven't had one yet".

"I don't want one!" Cindy yelled, making Lily jump.

She recoiled, "What the hell is up with you, Cin?"

Cindy began to respond, but stopped herself, "You know what, I can't do this anymore, I'm going home" She said, "I'm sure Steve or Tommy can walk you home later".

As she stood up to leave, Lily grabbed her wrist, "Where are you going? It's only eleven, you can't leave now".

"I said I'm going home. I'm sick of this" She replied, wrenching out of Lily's grasp and starting to walk away.

"Sick of what?" Lily called after her, confused.

She turned and gestured in Lily's direction, "This".

"Me? What have I done?" Lily frowned, following her friend down the drive, "I haven't done anything wrong".

"See, that's the problem with you! You don't know what you're doing!" Cindy retorted, coming to a halt, "You say we're friends and then you just use me as a way to get to places cause you can't be bothered to learn to drive-"

"Cindy, that's not true!" Lily protested, shaking her head.

"It is true! You use me and then you leave as soon as you don't need me. Like tonight, you used me as a way of getting to this party, and then you've spent all night either asking me to drink or complaining that I'm not dancing. You knew I didn't want to come, I hate parties! I'm trying to get into Harvard for god sake, but you don't care about that. You don't care about anything I do!"
