part three𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, Lily found herself experiencing something she'd never felt before. She was nervous to be around a boy. Usually, she could easily charm any boy she took a liking to, without trying. It was one of her "talents", as Carol had often said. But with Steve, she felt nervous around him. She found that she could barely look him in the eye without feeling awkward, which was inconvenient to say the least, as they were spending the day together.
On the drive back over to the Henderson's house, Lily hardly said a word. She was sat in the passenger seat, repeatedly playing with the same strand of hair, wishing she hadn't succumbed to her crush on Steve. She'd already seemed to have forgotten how to act round him.
"What's up?" He asked her, "You're being quiet again".
Lily shook her head, "No, I'm not. I'm just thinking".
"About what?" Steve said, looking at her expectantly.
"Cindy" She lied, then she added, truthfully, "I'm worried about today. What if we can't find her?"
Steve placed a hand on her knee, making her stomach turn a somersault. "We're gonna find her, Lil" He said, although he avoided her gaze and sounded uncertain.
Aside from an occasional remark from Steve, they spent the rest of the ride to the Henderson's house in silence. Lily breathed a sigh of relief once they pulled into the driveway. Dustin was already outside, looking impatient.
"Take your time, why don't you!" He called to them, as soon as they'd climbed out of the car.
"Let me remind you Henderson-" Steve said, opening the trunk, "That we don't have to be here".
"I know that" Dustin grumbled, walking over to help Steve unload the trunk, "And believe me, I'd rather have Mike, or Lucas here, but no one's-"
"No one's answering your code red, you told us yesterday" Lily finished, joining the boys by the trunk.
Steve grinned at her and handed her two buckets filled to the top with raw meat. Their plan was to create a trail of food through the woods for Dart to follow into the old junkyard, where they would catch him and kill him.
Not expecting the buckets to be as heavy as they were, Lily practically thew them both onto the ground, "Jesus I'm not that strong, Steve" She frowned.
"You sure you're ready to catch this thing?" He joked.
She grimaced, "No, but I haven't really got a choice".
Just then, Dustin's radio started to make a noise and, "This is Lucas, do you copy?" Came through the static.
"Well, look who it is" Dustin answered, while Lily and Steve continued to unload the trunk, trying to not make it obvious that they were listening in to the conversation.
