Depending on what you look like (or act) they might have suspected that something was off in the first place. Now, I'm not saying you might look like the typical alien (weird shaped head and strange color) but just a little different - could be purple eyes for example. Also, if you're really confident in what you're doing and what you look like - aka not caring what anyone thinks - they might be a little hesitant to ask you about your past. I mean have you seen some of those bombshells? Imagine being so confident in yourself that a giant mutated turtle is taking a step back.
Once you got to know them know they also became a little more confident and asked you questions. All seemed well and cool (fascinating to say the least) until you brought up your magical powers. As if. A cute girl like you having magical powers? What are you? An avenger? Show them. Show them what you're capable of. Be a little cocky if you#re up for it. You're a triple threat basically: smart, beautiful and powerful. They were happy to have you on their side. Both in private life and on the battle field.
