walk on water
Trauma. It's an inevitability in life. In Cassie's job. Emotional and physical. The former coming more often than not. To prepare for it—in her job at least—triage is how they prepare. It's smart, but just about the most boring thing to do. While actual surgeries and life-saving can be done, they're busy trying to "heal" Sydney Heron, getting lectured by Bailey about the importance.
Interrupted by the Chief entering the ER with a new hair color that looks like he bought the dye at the drug store, "Attention, people. Look I'm sorry. I have to interrupt the session for a moment."
Sydney speaks up from her place on the patient bed, "Chief, I like your new hair. Really brings out your eyes."
Ignoring her, Bailey turns to Dr. Webber, "Do you need something, sir?"
"We just received word of a mass casualty incident nearby." He announces, "All available level one trauma centers have been asked to respond. I need to send a team into the field immediately."
Cristina asks what they're all thinking, "Is this a part of the exercise? Are we suppose to act appropriately, uh, tense?" Dr. Webber denies that saying that he's unaware of the situation, but it's all hands on deck.
Cassie turns to Alex to the left of her, "This has got to be part of the exercise. The day we're doing triage there's a mass casualty that we need to go on the scene for? I'm not buying it."
He tilted his head to the side, "I don't think so. I don't think they'd be prepping this much."
"Weird coincidence then." She commented.
"An unfortunate one," Alex corrected her.
She shook her head, "Well, yeah, of course."
After loading up with their jackets and bags, the gaggle of interns and their resident headed out to the ambulance bay where the paramedics informed Bailey that there was only enough room for five people due to all the equipment. "Yang, Scott, stay with the Chief and take care of the incoming wounded."
"Really?" Cassie scoffed.
Bailey looked crossed at the intern's indignation towards the situation. "Yes, really. Now stay back and help with the incoming trauma. Cassie turned around reentering the ER in frustration.

"This is so stupid, I should be there," Cassie complained, pacing back and forth on the nearly empty waiting room floor as Cristina death glared over at the girl. "We should be there." She talked with her hands.
"At least we'll have the first pick on the surgeries here." Cristina offered some support Cassie with an overemphasized tone in her reclined place in her chair. She stared up at whatever was playing on the TV.
With an exaggerated eyeroll and gasp falling onto a chair, Cassie commented, "Since when are you okay with not going on the scene." She placed her legs over the arm of the chair.
"Whatever." Cristina got up from the sofa exiting the waiting room.
Cassie threw her hands up in the air, talking to herself, "What's her problem?"
—
"Wait, a ferry boat crashed?" Cassie stood, mouth agape at what the Chief had just informed her and Cristina of.
The Chief nodded, "All the victims and their families are going to be directed here. I need the two of you in the Pit for any incoming trauma."
He sent them off, stopping them in their tracks, "Yang." Cassie stopped along with, "Congratulations, I heard that you got engaged."
"Thank you, sir," Cristina responded. The Chief turned around walking away from the two.
Cassie knit her eyebrows, "You got engaged?"
"Shut up."
—
Suture after suture and stitch after stitch, Cassie was in need of a break due to the strain of her eyes and she's pretty sure if she doesn't she'll give herself sutures by accident. "Hey, when did you get back?" She asks as she walks into the locker room spotting Alex.
He rolled his eyes away from Cristina and towards Cassie, "About a half-hour ago. Came back with a Jane Doe, that Yang stole from me."
Cristina gives him an annoyed look, "I did not steal her from you."
"Yes, you did." Alex scoffs walking towards the exit of the locker room, "I have to go comfort families." Turning and exiting the room.
"I have to go do sew skin together," Cristina muttered annoyed.
Cassie gives a liberal eyeroll, "Geez, what is everyone's problem?"
