the heart of the matter
"Dr. Scott?" Cassie's small brunette intern approached her. Nowhere in her mind was her name. It's too embarrassing now to ask her name, but nowhere in her mind was this girl's name.
Her clear mind tried to respond, "Uh, yes, uh...yes? What is it?" That name wasn't going to come to her, ever.
Before the brunette could answer, George came rushing through, "Cassie, have you seen Izzie anywhere?!"
"Uh, no. Why?" Before any answer could be given by George he ran off down the hallway. "George!" She sighed and turned back to her chart at the nurses' station. She shook her head, not wanting to get in between all that drama.
The intern beside her cleared her thought, "Dr. Scott?" Cassie raised her head making eye contact with her. "Uh, Dr. Bailey sent me to get you. She's consulting with the patient right now."
The blonde furrowed her brows in confusion, "Why didn't she just page me?" Cassie asked as she shrugged her shoulder at her resident.
Cassie closed the chart handing it to a nurse and sauntered to the patient's room. She opened the door and stood next to Bailey, introducing herself to the patient, Ruthie, and her boyfriend. Dr. Torres stood next to the X-rays zoned out. Bailey stood stunned at the couple and Dr. Torres.
The four of them exited the room, "Um, Dr. Bailey?" The resident glanced over at her as she placed the chart down at the station. "Why exactly do you need me? You have George."
"Dr. Scott?" Bailey commanded, not making eye contact with her, "Would you rather a take you off of this case?"
Cassie took a second, intimidated by the superior resident, "Uh, no, Dr. Bailey."
"Then be grateful, Scott."

"God, am I hungry!" Cassie sat next to Izzie and Meredith. Took a big bite out of her apple making a crunching noise before turning to Izzie and going, "Looks like Callie hasn't kicked your ass yet when is that happening?"
Izzie sighed, "You heard?"
She picked up a handful of fries, shoving them into her mouth, "Of course I heard. George told me." She explained as she continued to gobble down her food.
"You—you talked to George?" Izzie said in a questioning manner.
Pausing from ravaging her food, "Uh, yeah. I talk to him every day." She furrowed her brows at Izzie's expression, "Are you okay?"
"No, I'm about to get my ass beat." Izzie bluntly stated.
"Well, what are you fighting about?" Meredith asked as Alex took a seat next to Cassie and Izzie.
He placed his tray down, "Believe me, you don't want to know." Izzie then said his name in a warning tone. "I'm just saying, whatever it is, it's not worth it."
"Actually, it is. Some things are worth fighting for." Izzie bickered back to Alex as they gave each other weird looks.
Cassie wasn't too considered with anything going on with her group since it was mainly just Izzie trying to amp herself up and Cassie hadn't eaten all day. "Where'd you get that popcorn?" Cassie's eyes zeroed in on Cristina shaking a bag of microwave popcorn.
She knitted her eyebrows, "From the microwave."
"God, I haven't had popcorn in forever!" She whined reaching across the table to grab some out of the bag.
Cristina slapped her hand away, "Get your own popcorn."
Cassie's eyes were distracted by the door to the cafeteria opening to reveal Callie. Everyone else noticing. And much to Cassie delight and Cristina disappointment, enough time to grab a nice handful of popcorn and place it into her gullet. "Geez, are you okay?" Alex questioning her odd eating behavior.
"I'm hungry, geez. And shut up!" She harshly whispered, pointing straight to Callie approaching Izzie. And to the annoyance of all, no fight. As Callie left the room and Cassie collapsed back in her chair in disappointment. "That was an utter waste of time."
—
Ruthie sure is stupid. Or maybe it's her stupid boyfriend. Nonetheless, she and Dr. Bailey agreed, people are stupid. Ruthie sure was stupid.

Cassie walked with her head hung. She walked into the locker room, sitting down on the bench, taking a deep breath. "You okay?" Her head turned to where the voice was coming from.
She turned back around to face her locker cubby, "Uh, yeah." She stood up with a shaky breath. "Just lost a patient, so."
He nodded, "Okay."
He began to walk to his locker, "Alex?" The male resident looked her in the eye, "Are you okay?"
"Me?" He queried, "Yeah, why wouldn't I be?" Cassie shrugged in return. "I broke up with you and you thanked me and cheered. That was great for my ego."
The blonde chuckled, she stood up, "Your ego is fine. We weren't gonna work out anyway. God, we barely talked even talked towards the end." Both of them joining each other in laughter.
"You know, we're the only two that know about Izzie and George." Cassie nodded, trying to understand what he was going to say. "I always thought you and George would be the two to get together.
She sounded an ew causing Alex to chuckle. "I thought you and Izzie would get together." He chuckled again. "I'm serious. I mean I always thought you two were better together. You know, both of you were at your best when you were with each other, in my opinion." He didn't respond this time, "If only it had last. Well, if only you hadn't cheated on her, really. Or Denny."
"What do you mean?" He questioned.
"You stare. It's pretty obvious, but Izzie's too oblivious due to George, Callie, whatever drama that she doesn't seem to notice." The room fell in silence before Cassie grabbed her bag and began to walk out of the room. She faced him again, "And you know, Alex, I wasted my time thinking I was in love with you. Don't waste your time thinking you're not in love with Izzie. Or that this whole George-Izzie-Callie love triangle is exactly a thing. If we know anything everyone is gonna get hurt in the end. Are you going to be there for her when it does?"
