a change is gonna come

Holy crap. Holy crap. Safe to say, walking into a different locker room, one with wooden cubbies, she's freaking out. How is she supposed to be a doctor? How is she supposed to be in charge of interns?

She misses George. She hasn't seen him since their talk about Cristina's failed wedding and she doesn't know if he's coming back or not. She took a flight home and visited her parents (and her brother's grave). She knows Meredith and Cristina went on what would have been Cristina's honeymoon, but she's unclear on what everybody else did.

"Izzie, what are the 5 rules? What are the 5 rules?!" Cassie shouted to Izzie as they prepared to meet their interns.

The taller blonde gripped the petite girl's shoulders, "Cassie!" She shut her mouth as Izzie grabbed her attention, "You are fine. You know them. You are good." Cassie nodded frantically back at her. "Okay, take a deep breath." As Cassie inhaled and exhaled Izzie continued to encourage her, "You got this. Let's go kick some intern butt." Izzie held her hand up, slapping them against one another.

Cassie collapsed on the spare hospital beds next to Alex as Izzie, Cristina, and Meredith talked about how bad they did with their interns. Of course, Alex being himself, boasted about how good he was. "It was horrible. I am horrible." She complained, she closed her eyes replaying forgetting rule #3. So, instead of the whole, "you said there were 5 rules, you only said 4." Really there were only 3 rules and for the life of her, she couldn't think of anything to say. "I'm horrible."

"Meredith, can I talk to you?" Cassie perked up as she heard her best friend's voice.

A big smile came across her face as she saw George O'Malley standing a few feet away, "George, I—"

Izzie interrupted talking about how she was lonely. God, to say the least Izzie and him have been very odd and awkward lately. "Then Mer and Cristina went on Cristina's honeymoon without me."

"Girl-on-girl honeymoon," Alex chuckled being the perverted man he was, even though everyone, including Cassie, was thinking it.

Izzie turned her head towards Alex, "And then Alex took a road trip to see Ava without me." Cassie combed back through her memory before the once pregnant, memory lost girl from the ferry accident popped in her head.

Alex corrected her, "I did not go to see Ava. And her name's Rebecca. And I didn't go see her. I just drove in that direction."

Eyebrows furrowed in confusion, "Why would he want to see Alex's wannabe girlfriend that's already married?" Cassie questioned, leaning against the wall behind the bed.

Izzie titled her head to the side in annoyance, "Cassie went to New York—"

Cassie clarified by saying, "To visit my parents."

"I like New York. I love New York and I wouldn't mind meeting your parents." She countered.

"Geez, you must have been really lonely, like really lonely, because my parents are like the equivalent of like..." she thought for a second, "like strangling a little bird to death."

"Ew, Cassie, why did you put that image in my head?" A grossed out blonde retched.

She chortled in response, "Sadly, it's the truth."

"God, now I'm thinking about dead birds," Izzie muttered, looking down at her lap.

Cristina then interrupted the two's bickering about dead baby birds (gross), "Why is everyone so tingly and hurt? I mean, I was the one left at the altar." All heads snapped away from the charts, lunch, snacks, sleeping, or whatever and to the almost bride. "I'm fine, by the way." She monotony said (as Cristina always talks), "I honeymooned in Hawaii and I snorkeled."

"God, I'd kill to go to Hawaii. Maybe get tan for once," Cassie sleepily commented as she lied back down. She heard Izzie focus her attention back on George, he ignored her.

The small blonde felt the mattress indent next to her, she opened her eyes to an intern's ass, shrieking in fright as Cristina told them, "This area is for residents only, no interns." Everyone besides her heckling them to leave, Cassie too petrified in fear to do so. George leaving with them despite their protests to make him stay. "Is this how it's going to be all year because Bambi has got to learn how to cope."

"At least he came back." Izzie pointed out.

Meredith agreeing, "Yeah, cut him some slack."

"Dude, he failed his exam and got left back in kindergarten," Alex noted as he wrote in his chart.

"I'm scarred for life," Cassie blankly said. "That intern's ass is forever going to be in my face." All five of their pagers beeping, running towards the ER, well, slowly running.

She's got this, or at least that's what Cassie tells herself as she directs her interns around, it's been quite some time since she's been in ER. Still, she orders them to follow her as they walk out to wait for an ambulance.

"What should we do?" One of her interns asked. Cristina is naming her interns after numbers, Cassie might enlist the method because she doesn't remember anyone's name. She's never been that good at remembering them.

The blonde's eyes looked around to her fellow residents, "Um, uh, just, uh, follow me." She attempted to disguise herself as she cringed. While they're following her she's followed Alex, she's really not cut out to be a resident.

Cassie stood with Joey, the patient with nothing wrong with him which is causing Alex to yell at Callie, it's very interesting, except Joey. Joey is not interesting, in fact, all he does is talk about how hungry he is. She agrees. She's ready for lunch and it's only 9 o'clock.

She has no interest in ortho and the only thing up with him is this shattered knee cap that seems like they're never going to actually treat him. Maybe because Alex is running off to threatening to go over Callie's head to Bailey. Funny considering Bailey isn't chief resident, somehow.

Things eventually get interesting. The dude has pica. He ate the clamps! Safe to say, Alex goes Bailey anyway, but he had a perforated abdomen. Maybe that's why he's hungry all the time. She's hungry enough to eat the clamps. Alex gets the victory though.

"I miss not seeing you," Cassie tells George as she spots him in the hallway leaning against a wall. "I spent the day embarrassed in front of my interns and with Alex." She stood next to him, resting her head on his shoulder.

George sighed loudly, "This whole day has been déjà vu or like groundhogs day, but it's just me repeating my intern year over and over and over and over—"

Cassie chuckles, "Yeah, I got it, George." She lifted her head, turning it to face George, "I had a guy that ate the clamps. I was hungry all day and then I was nauseous looking at a perforated abdomen and never ate. He had a bunch of coins and there and I didn't even get to keep them." She scoffed, "Alex did. And," She stepped forward in front of George, smiling, "I missed you."

He smiled back, "I missed you too."
