drowning on dry land
The waiting room was pouring out with people as Cassie struggled to make her way through. Her doctor status made her in high demand with those waiting. "Do you have a new list?" When she raised the paper to her eye level, the woman in front of her quickly snatched it out of her hand. "Excuse me—"
"This is the same one!" She shouted back at her. "Why don't you know anything new? It's been two hours."
As shouts began to arise she spotted Alex a couple of feet away. She inched herself away from the crowd, "Do you have a new list?"
He shook his head, "No one knows anything. The Chief doesn't know anything, the police don't know anything, Search & Rescue don't know anything. I don't know what to do—"
"It's the same guy from earlier." One of the family members said as the bustle began again.
Alex lifted his hands up, "God," he muttered before raising his voice, "I don't know anything. No one knows anything."
Cassie touched his shoulder, "I'm going to go to the ER. Tell me if you need any help."
"Okay, thanks." Sensing his tense she headed out the door and towards the ER.

Cassie's hands finish another suture when George rushes in, "Have you seen a little boy?"
"Huh?" She questions as she stands up and walks away from the patient. He thursts the photo for her to see, "No, why?" Without getting a response, George dashed off in a hurry. She shouted at him, "Why?!"
Spotting Cristina, she walked over towards the woman, "Do you know what is up with George?"
She followed the intern around before she snapped around to face her, "Have you seen Meredith?" Cassie kept quiet as she stared her down before she widened her eyes looking for an answer.
"Uh," she thought back through her day, "Not since she left, I think." Before Cristina quickly dashed off, "Do you..." She threw her hands up in frustration. "Where is everyone going?" She talked to herself, "And now I'm talking to myself. Great."
She went to walk away before she looking and seeing Alex, "Are you okay?" He asked her. His eyebrows raised at her in confusion placing a chart on the Nurses' Station.
Her eyes darted in twelve different directions it seemed like she then asked him, "Do you know what's going on with George?"
He looked up from the chart in front of him, "O'Malley?" She nodded. "He's looking for some boy."
"I know that, but why?"
He shrugged, "He promised some mom that he'd find her kid and then he like lied to her said he found him when he didn't."
Her mouth gaped open, "What?" He shrugged. "Why are you shrugging?" He shrugged again. "Stop shrugging!" She demanded. "Why aren't you helping him?"
He lifted his face from the chart so his eyes were on hers now, "I did we went through the morgue and looked at all the bodies and didn't find him so at least he's not dead."
"Or the kid's dead in the Puget Sound." Cassie's anger boiled over Alex's nonchalance over the subject before she stormed off. His eyes followed her, reflecting on his words.

When Izzie finally returned recounting the tale of how she's back in the game ("Burr holes, Cassie! Burr holes!"), everyone's (Cristina's) concern over Meredith's location was heightened. "I'm sure she's fine. She's out there being Meredith and saving lives. What's been the big deal about her all-day?" Izzie assured Cristina. The three girls were walking towards the ER together.
"I just need to tell her something." She told the blondes as the rounded a corner.
"What?" Cassie questioned, her curiosity has been wondering since this morning. The woman kept quiet until Cassie asked again, "What?"
She shook her head, "Nothing." She pushed one of the doors open, Izzie pushing the other as all three passed through them.
Cassie rolled her eyes, "Obviously it's something because you said you had something to tell her." Cristina seemed to ignore her comment walking away from Cassie and Izzie.
"Those two," Izzie stated, "they're a closed group."
Cassie shook her shoulders, joking, "Maybe they're a couple."
Izzie nodded, "I wouldn't doubt it."
—
A sorrowful feeling filled the whole room as the four interns, in their light blue scrubs, stared at Derek Shepherd and Mark Sloan sitting aside one another. "It's Meredith?" Cristina's voice can be heard behind Cassie. George replying with a yes. "Are you sure? Did you sure? Because it could be—" Alex interrupting her, grabbing her arm, stating that it was in fact Meredith.
A hand was placed on Cassie's shoulder as she looked up to see Alex. She quickly walked so she stood next to George, Alex's hand returning to his side. "Did you find the boy?"
George nodded in return, slightly laughing, "In Callie's operating room the whole time. Thank god." He raised his head so he was facing her, "I don't know what I would have done if I didn't find him."
She shook her head, "Don't think about it, you found him. That's all that matters."
Tears filled George's eyes, "But what about Meredith?"
Tears now filled Cassie's eyes as she replied with a simple shrugged.
