After waking up a couple of hours later, doctor Halstead checked her vitals and breathing again and was ready to discharge her.
"Did you find out? About the pregnant woman?"
"The only thing that I got was that there was an emergency C-section and the woman is in a coma, but I can't be sure if it's the woman you saw or not."
"Do you think she's going to wake up?"
Will looks at her for a moment and then quickly looks back at her medical chart but Teresa wasn't stupid, and she knew he was trying to find a way not to answer her.
"You said coma... Is she braindead?"
"Yes." Will answers after a few seconds. "Her husband isn't ready to let go of her so she's still on the machines. But the baby is fine which is really good."
"So... am I discharged, doctor Halstead?"
"Yes. You seem perfectly fine, so you're good to go. Is someone picking you up?"
"I'll call my brother and he'll come."
"Okay. I'll go finish the paperwork and give you some time to get dressed."
"Wait, where are my clothes?"
"Unfortunately, I had to cut off that beautiful dress you brought with you."
"Oh no.... It was probably the most expensive piece of clothe that I owned."
"Good thing is you get free hospital clothes. Ask your brother to bring a jacket with him since you might be cold with just what we got."
"Okay. Thank you."
Will gets out, closing the blinds and sliding the glass door so she'd have some privacy. After a few moments and a call to her brother, she exits her room.
Teresa signs some papers and then goes to the waiting room, sitting down until her brother comes around and calls a taxi to get them to her apartment. Two days later Voight calls her and tells her she has a job at Intelligence if she stills want it. They agree to meet the next morning so that she can sign a contract, find out how most things work in the team and be introduced to the others.
"I got a job!" Teresa almost screams as she gets out of the bedroom and into the living room.
"Congratulations!" Toby stands up and hugs her. "They'd be stupid not to hire you anyway."
"Nothing like my Ranger brother, though."
"You've had your share of service to this country, my sister. You honoured the Marines."
"Let's have breakfast tomorrow morning before I go to the 21."
"Sure. I'll pay." Toby offers.
They sit on the couch and stay quiet for a while, then Teresa speaks shyly. "Should we go see mom?"
"Julia doesn't even care if we're still alive or not."
The siblings rarely called Julia and Theodore by 'mother' and 'father' or 'mom' and 'dad'. The fact that Teresa actually used the term 'mom' was alarming for Toby. He was worried that now that she'd be permanently in Chicago, she'd be more and more drawn to make contact with Julia.
"I get that she is bipolar and all," Toby starts again. "But she had free medication for it. She chose not to take it. She chose not to be there for us, not to give a shit about us, or if we were hungry or cold or able to actually live a life."
"You're doing great, you know?" He continues. "All that fell into your shoulders, the lack of family support that you had... you did great things, and you continue to do so."
