After a day at work, Teresa stood at the door of the familiar house. She didn't just enter it, since she didn't want to act like it was her house, otherwise it would be as if she had responsability for it.
She knocked twice and soon one of her half-brothers opened the door for her.
"Hey. What's up? You good?" Tyler asks.
"Yeah... decided now would be a good time as any to stop by."
"Come in, come in. Your mom is cooking dinner right now." He says as Teresa enters the house. "Well, attempting at least." He says when he notices by her facial expressions she could smell the burnt food.
"How has everything been around here? No drugs? No alcohol?"
"Other than a couple of beers, no alcohol."
Teresa looks around the house.
"I had a photo album in my room. Any chance you've seen it?"
"Maybe it's still there." Tyler shrugs.
"Teresa!" Theodor shows up with a beer in hand. "You came just in the right time! Your mother just finished dinner."
"I'm not hungry. I just want to get something of mine from here."
"Oh, come on! Just have dinner with us."
"I don't have time, maybe another day."
"Teresa?" Theodor stepped to the side for Teresa to see who was calling her. Her mother, Julia.
It was weird seeing her after all this time, and it was even weirder that she looked normal not sick, as she always used to be.
"Look, I can't stay long, I just came for my photo album... The one I made with photos of me and Toby."
"It's in my room. Are you gonna take it?" Julia asks.
"Yeah, it's mine, isn't it?" Teresa asks as if it was obvious. "My photos and my album, so yeah, I'm taking it home."
"Well, can you at least leave one for me?" Julia asks not fighting for the whole album.
"Fine, I'll leave you one."
Teresa goes up the stairs without saying anything else and enters the room that always belonged to Julia. The room was messy, but it wasn't a mess. When Teresa and Toby lived there it was 10 times worse, and most days Julia would just lie on her bed surrounded by the mess. Where was this Julia when they were growing up? When they needed her?
Teresa leaves one of the photos on the bedside table and then goes down with the album. At the end of the stairs was Tom.
"Leaving already?" He asks relaxed.
"Yeah. I shouldn't even be here."
"Of course you should! This is your house."
"It was my house. I paid for it several times, but it's not anymore. And it was never my home."
"Tyler really wants to change that. And Julia as well. They want you to stay. Tyler as been making changes around here so that dad and Julia don't step out of the line."
"You had drug dealers staying here not long ago."
"And that is gone, too. And we've been wanting them gone for a while."
Teresa looks at Tom in silence.
"Just stay for dinner. What's the worse that can happen? It's just a dinner that Julia tried to cook."
"You know the worse that can happen is us dying poisoned, right?" Teresa jokes.
Tom smiles at her. "Come on, sis. Let's see what's going on in the kitchen."
