Jimin's POV
"Y/N? Why are you calling at this hour? Is there something wrong?" Her voice was laced with sleep, soft and groggy. I couldn't blame her. It was already 2 a.m.
"I just... I'm thinking about Taehyung."
"Is it because of her girlfriend?" I could hear her sit up in bed, concern replacing the drowsiness in her voice. I felt a twinge of guilt for waking her up.
"Yeah, sorry to wake you. Please go back to sleep. You shouldn't be awake at this hour."
"It's fine. You can tell me what's bothering you."
I began pouring my heart out, telling Y/N how much I felt for Taehyung. I knew he deserved what he got, but he was still my best friend, and I cared about him more than I let on. We talked for a while, and before I knew it, I heard her soft, rhythmic breaths on the other end. She'd fallen asleep mid-conversation. I smiled, a warm feeling spreading through me as I heard her snoring lightly. I decided to end the call so she could rest.
"I love you."
YOUR POV
I had just stepped out of the shower when the doorbell rang, relentless and loud. Of course, it was Jimin messing with it again. I quickly threw on some clothes and rushed downstairs to open the door.
"Jimin, I told you not to play with my—"
"...Taehyung?"
I froze. Standing at my doorstep was Taehyung, with his signature boxy smile, but his expression faltered as soon as he saw me.
"He plays with your doorbell too?" He asked, his voice soft.
I couldn't help but look down at my hands, feeling a knot form in my stomach.
FLASHBACK
"What? Taehyung! Why do you keep ringing my doorbell? You can just come in anytime, you know the password, right?" I had said it jokingly, but he smiled that charming smile, planting a soft kiss on my cheek.
"I know, Y/N. But if I did that, you'd always know it's me. I like seeing you so excited to open the door for me." His words were playful, but it was his charm that made it so endearing. I couldn't stay mad at him. Instead, I felt my heart soften.
"Alright. But if my doorbell breaks, you'll replace it," I teased.
"Sure. I'll buy you as many as you want." He winked at me, and I felt my heart skip a beat.
"Promise you'll always be excited to see me when I ring your doorbell? And only me?"
"Taehyung, you're the only one who rings my doorbell like that."
"So, promise?"
"What am I promising?"
"Just say promise!"
"Okay, whatever. I promise."
"Last one to get to the park buys ice cream!" With that, he was already dashing off, a playful grin on his face.
END OF FLASHBACK
The memory hit me hard. Why was I letting it affect me now? I wasn't supposed to care anymore, yet here I was, tears threatening to spill.
"I thought when I rang your doorbell so many times, you'd know it was me. But I guess it's different now." Taehyung's voice cut through my thoughts. He was smiling, but there was an underlying sadness in his eyes.
"Taehyung, you know—"
"Shh, it's fine." He gently cut me off, his voice softer now. "Care to take a walk with me to the park?"
We walked in silence for what felt like hours, sitting on the swings, eating ice cream. The silence felt comfortable, but the tension was palpable.
"How are you and Jimin getting along?" Taehyung suddenly broke the silence, his voice a bit distant.
"We're getting along fine. He's a great guy."
"Lucky," he muttered under his breath, almost too quietly for me to hear.
"Hm? What was that?" I asked, though I had heard him clearly.
"Nothing. I said I'm still hungry." He tried to mask it with a grin, but it didn't quite reach his eyes. I nodded and continued eating my ice cream, unsure of what to say next.
"Y/N... I just want to say I'm so—"
"Jimin?" I cut him off abruptly, my phone ringing. I saw his expression falter as I picked up the call.
"Sure, we'll be there," I said, quickly answering Jimin's request. I looked back to see Taehyung staring at the sunset, the remnants of his ice cream forgotten in his hand.
"Tae, Jimin said we need to head to the dorm now."
"We?" His tone was suddenly cold, distant. He stood up without waiting for me, heading off toward the exit.
"Yeah, I'm going too," I said, chasing after him.
"Ah. Cool." His voice was flat as he kept walking, leaving me to catch up.
I wasn't sure how things would unfold, but I knew one thing for sure: Taehyung was going to have to face the truth soon. The boys were planning something, and I hoped it would be enough to shake him out of this illusion.
