TRIS
Groaning as I drag myself out of bed, I suddenly realize that today is the first day of school. The start of junior year at my new school, Divergent High, in Chicago. I'm ready for a clean slate. Life back in Portland was all I've ever known, and now it's time for something different. I've known all of my old friends since kindergarten, and while I miss them, I am excited to meet new people. High school hasn't been more difficult for me than the next teenager, but hell, high school doesn't go easy on anyone. Sure doesn't make it any easier being the new kid as a junior.
My family is extremely important to me. My parents have given me everything, and for that I'm completely grateful. My dad is an accomplished prosecutor, and recently got a job in the District Attorney's Office, which is what moved us here to Chicago a month ago. My mom is a fashion designer, so she splits her time sketching new designs at home and traveling to different fashion capitals around the world. Although they both have to work a lot, they still try to spend as much time at home as they can, but my brother Caleb and I are old enough now to take care of ourselves. However, when they're not home, Caleb likes to act like my third parent. He's barely 14 months older than me, although he may as well be 20 years older. But as soon as Mom and Dad walk through the door, Caleb drops the act and returns to the annoying older brother I grew up with.
Steam rises out of the shower as I step into the tub, letting the hot water wake me up. Another upside of moving halfway across the country is that I no longer have to share a bathroom with my brother. My parents built our house in Portland when we were little, and for some reason decided a jack-and-jill bathroom would be best. Yeah, right.
After my shower, I walk into my closet, picking out a pair of jeans, a grey cropped t-shirt, and a pair of sneakers. Then I move back to the bathroom, where I wash my face and apply makeup, just doing a bit of foundation and concealer, a light-peachy color on my eyelids, blush, of course, mascara, and finishing it off with a tinted lip balm. Running my fingers through my long, straight hair, I mess around with my part for a few seconds before just throwing it back and calling it good.
"Bea! I'm leaving! You're taking too long!" Caleb calls from downstairs. He always has to be ridiculously early, so I'm not worried about being late. Plus, I can drive myself since we each have a car. I head back into my room, grabbing a gold Kendra Scott necklace and a couple of bracelets from my mess of a jewelry display on my dresser. Once I'm downstairs, I see that Caleb actually left. Being the bookworm he is, I assume he wants to get a head start on his classes. I can't really blame him though, we were relocated right before his senior year.
I grab a blueberry muffin off the counter and my water bottle from the cupboard, filling it up at the sink as I take a bite from my muffin. Screwing the cap onto my full water bottle, I feel my phone vibrating, so I pull it out of my pocket. I smile at the text from Mom, who is in LA—no, New York—wishing a good first day to Caleb and I in our family group chat. After sending back a heart emoji, I grab my backpack from the island counter and sling the strap over my shoulder. Heading out to my Jeep, I find directions to my new school and queue up my favorite playlist for the drive.
Nice to meet you, where you been?
I could show you incredible things
Magic, madness, heaven, sin
Saw you there and I thought
Oh my God, look at that face
You look like my next mistake
Love's a game, wanna play?
New money, suit and tie
I can read you like a magazine
Ain't it funny, rumors fly
And I know you heard about me
So hey, let's be friends
I'm dying to see how this one ends
Grab your passport and my hand
I can make the bad guys good for a weekend
So it's gonna be forever
Or it's gonna go down in flames
You can tell me when it's over
If the high was worth the pain
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They'll tell you I'm insane
'Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game
'Cause we're young and we're reckless
We'll take this way too far
It'll leave you breathless
Or with a nasty scar
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They'll tell you I'm insane
But I've got a blank space, baby
And I'll write your name
Cherry lips, crystal skies
I could show you incredible things
Stolen kisses, pretty lies
You're the King, baby, I'm your Queen
Find out what you want
Be that girl for a month
Wait, the worst is yet to come, oh no
Screaming, crying, perfect storms
I can make all the tables turn
Rose garden filled with thorns
Keep you second guessing like
"Oh my God, who is she?"
I get drunk on jealousy
But you'll come back each time you leave
'Cause, darling, I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream
So it's gonna be forever
Or it's gonna go down in flames
You can tell me when it's over
If the high was worth the pain
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They'll tell you I'm insane
'Cause you know I love the players
And you love the game
'Cause we're young and we're reckless
We'll take this way too far
It'll leave you breathless
Or with a nasty scar
Got a long list of ex-lovers
They'll tell you I'm insane
But I've got a blank space, baby
And I'll write your name
Boys only want love if it's torture
Don't say I didn't say, I didn't warn ya
Boys only want love if it's torture
Don't say I didn't say, I didn't warn ya
So it's gonna be forever
Or it's gonna go down in flames
