The suburban street was dark and quiet

The suburban street was dark and quiet. All of the lights in the houses were turned off except for one with white siding, a dark blue roof and shutters, and a large porch where teenagers conjugated with their red solo cups. The music grew louder as I slowly drove closer to the brightly lit abode.

It was our high school graduation and parties were all over town. However, this house, in particular, belonged to one of the most popular guys in school, Alex Rogers. He was the basketball team's most valuable player and captain so naturally, he would be dating the captain of the cheerleading squad, my best friend Madison.

Finding an empty spot on the side of the street, I parallel park my red Volkswagen Beetle in between two large trucks and shut off the engine. I sigh out loud at the sight of a group of teenage boys drunkenly doing backflips in the front yard, already annoyed with being here in the first place.

"Do we have to go to this? We just graduated high school. We can officially be done with these losers," I point out to a guy throwing up in the bushes and it was only 9:45 at night.

"Come on, Ava. For me? I can't just not show up to my own boyfriend's party," Madison sticks out her bottom lip, pleading with her hands clasped in front of her and her blue eyes so rounded that it almost makes her lashes touch her brows.

Annoyed, I snatch my purse from the backseat and huff out as I violently grab the door handle, "Come on. Damn!"

Madison squeals as she hops out of the passenger side door and skips around to hug me, her sandals clacking on the street as she makes her way around the car before she launches herself onto me in gratitude. Three of the guys in the yard catcall out to us as they see us in an embrace and I instantly shoot her a look that lets my best friend know just how unhappy I am at that moment.

Throughout our entire high school career, I didn't care to date anyone. I had no interest in the boys at my school and their overly hormonal and quite juvenile behavior. Madison, for example, had been dating Alex since our sophomore year and he has cheated on her and they had broken up more times than I could keep track of. That kind of a waste of my time wasn't what fancied me in the least.

On the bright side, I got amazing grades. While I wasn't valedictorian of my graduating class or anything, I did get into the university I wanted and Madison and I would be starting the same college together. With it not being more than an hour from our town, I was glad I would still be able to come home to see my mother when I needed to. The thought of leaving her alone scared me. My father worked a lot and well, let's just say home life isn't exactly ideal all of the time.

We walk up the brick-paved steps and opened the large frosted glass front door causing the hip-hop music to grow even louder from the oversized speakers in the living room. I look around and see many girls from school in their shortest skirts dancing on guys and tables and downing cups of cheap beer. One girl, in particular, was already passed out in the corner while two guys drew an unsuspected mustache on her face with a black permanent marker.
