Late at night in Seattle, Washington, a fifteen year old Wynonna James Ryder is taking a walk after she helped her mom get her three year old brother to sleep. Nona does this almost every night...
Walking. Alone.
It's the only time she has to really think about her life. She takes many shortcuts throughout the city, just to see if there are any newer spaces rhe can squeeze through.
Wynonna admits she's not as skinny as she'd like, but she is fairly small in height. It is easy for her to crawl through tight spaces if she needs and due to her three years in track in high school, Nona is a pretty speedy runner. She's challenged to race quite a bit from other students in Seattle High.
Wynonna looks up at the sky and looks at the moon. It's at the phase right before a full moon, which is her favorite - the full moon. She's always happier on that day. And it has nothing to do with the supernatural. She doesn't really believe in that stuff.
"Wynonna!" Jack, the Ryder family's neighbor, greets as he jogs up to join the light skinned girl's side. "What are you doing out this late?"
"What I'm always doing out this late," Wynonna replies. "Taking a nightly walk when I can think because it's usually quite.""Yeah, yeah, whatever," Jack mutters. "We have that class trip in a couple days..."
"I know, and I'm excited," Nona replies. "We get to look at the life of the sea animals."
Jack hums and he walks into his apartment building. Nona simply shrugs and she tightens her jacket around her small body as she walks on down the sidewalk and she decides to take a short cut through an alley between Jack's apartment building and the local business building.Wynonna stops walking at a large spider web, and it almost looks... shiny? She isn't really sure how she'd explain it. The spider, however, has a black body wirh a red spot near the bottom of the bigger part of its body.
Nona nearly screams when the spider jumps at her and lands on her arm. She gasps but she inhales. Trying not to breath onto the creature she wishes she could smush with her leather boots. She gasps as it bites and she quickly knocks it off.
"Come on!" Adam Ryder demands, he followed his daughter, he's been watching this spider since he helped create it in the spider lab in the basement of his building. "Your brother is with a sitter. We're meeting your mother at my lab."
Wynonna doesn't argue with her father and she follows him to his Cadillac Escalade. Adam drives across Seattle and to his scientist lab and he rushes Nona ahead of him. Mary-Anne Ryder is waiting by a table for her elders daughter and husband.
"Wynonna, lay on that table," Adam instructs. "I'll keep an eye on you and see what this particular spider's bite does to your body."
Wynonna doesn't ask questions and she goes to lay on the gurney. Mary-Anne stands beside her husband and they watch their daughter, hand in hand. She's glad Adam followed Nona, or else she'd probably be freaking out about possible future abilities, if she gains them.
The problem for Adam is the not knowing. Not knowing if this bite will kill his and his wife's fifteen year old daughter, if she will gain odd and beyond scientific type abilities, or if nothing at all happens. That's what this part of the tenth floor is for.
Watching the person that was bit undergo the side-effects of the spider. Before following Nona to the car, Adam killed and properly disposed of the spider so that no one else could get bit. Only one person. Sure, he hates that it was his fifteen year old that was bitten but there's nothing he can do now.
The only thing Adam is certain about with this spider is that it's venom is fast spreading. He also knows they'll be here over night. The fact they'll be at the lab overnight is why Mary-Anne called and told the sitter, and called into the school - she's a freshman science teacher at the high school.
"Just relax, love," Adam says softly as he boots some monitors to both Nona's bear and heart - to keep track of her brain waves and heart rate during this time, and he returns to the office beyond a window, where he can see Wynonna but she can't see him. "Good night, love," he whispers as he looks at the screen. "This is going to be a long night."
And for the Ryder family, it was a long night.
