Chapter 18: A Christmas to Remember

               Another month has passed. The Ryder family have grown close to the pack. Bella remains unchanged. Charlie is trying his best to take care of an unresponsive eighteen year old. She and Paul even hooked up a couple more times. And she learned about wolves.

               For the past week, Wynonna has been getting sick every morning. Even when she stays all night with Leah or Emily with the kids, too. It's finally Christmas Day and Leah is forcing Wyn to go to the hospital. Almost everyone knows what's wrong with Wyn, even Wyn. Still, she wants to confirm her suspicion about the... thoughts.

           Wynonna is sitting in the empty waiting room of Forks Community Hospital's walk in clinic. The nurses and other staff have put red reefs up on the glass doors and are wearing either elf hats or Santa hats with Christmas scrubs on.

             "Wynonna Ryder?" A nurse says from the doorway.

            Wynonna stands and she follows the woman to the back. She gets weighed and the nurse checks her blood pressure, and temperature while asking the usual questions. Once that's done, the nurse leads Wynonna back to a room and has her pee in a cup, and tells her that dr. Nelson will be in shortly.

               "Hello, miss Ryder," dr. Nelson greets as the man walks in, he has balding white hair with pale blue eyes that are filled with warmth. "I'm dr. Nelson." He looks down at the chart and he grabs a piece of paper. "You came in for a pregnancy test, didn't you?"

            "Yes, a urine pregnancy test," Wynonna replies nervously.

              Dr. Nelson offers her a smile as he hands her the paper. The test results are positive. This means that Wyn is pregnant with Paul's baby. She touches her belly.

           "Would you like to discuss your options or...?"

         "I'm keeping the baby," Wynonna says quickly. "Could you give me some recommendations for good gynecologist?"

             "Dr. Julian in Port Angeles," Dr. Nelson says. "She's the best in the state of Washington."

            Dr. Nelson gives Wynonna the information for dr. Julian, and sends her on her way after prescribing her some prenatal vitamins. Wynonna picks up her script and heads home. Charlie is in the living room with the kids. As soon as he sees her, he heads out to buy a Christmas tree.

           "Nigel, come here," Wynonna says. "I have another Christmas gift for you."

            "Other than the life sized stuffed wolf?" Nigel beams as he approaches Wyn. "What is it?"

            "Another baby sibling," Wynonna replies.

           It takes him a moment but soon enough, Nigel lets out an excited shriek and he hugs Wynonna and he touches her stomach. Wyn grins like a mad woman and she tells him to get react. They're going to La Push to tell Paul.

           Luckily for Wyn, she finds Paul at his usual place - Sam and Emily's. Eliza goes straight to Sam on the couch when Nigel goes to find Emily. Sam begins to tickle a very, very ticklish Eliza when Wyn lures Paul out to the backyard. She hands him the paper.

             Paul stands there, as still as a statue, and he reads the positive pregnancy results Wyn got from the hospital. Paul's eyes widen as he reads it for the sixth time and he finally looks up at Wynonna.

           "You're pregnant?" Paul asks, his voice in a whisper. "When did you find out?"

         "Yes, and not even twenty minutes ago," Wyn replies. "I told Nigel and Eliza first." 

           Paul sighs and he hands her the paper, he looks at her stomach. "You're a vampire lover. This will never happen."

             "Did I say I wanted to be with you?" Wynonna asks harshly, making Paul flinch. "No, I didn't. You don't even have to be in this baby's life, but I'm having it. With or without its father. I have plenty of people to help me if I need it."

           "I'm sorry," Paul says after a moment of silence. "I'm not ready for the responsibility of a child. It's all yours."

         Wynonna closes her eyes as Paul goes off into the woods for a run. She feels a warm hand in her shoulder and opens her eyes, Wyn finds Jared standing in front of her. From the look in his brown eyes, he heard what happened. Jared wraps his friend into a hug as Sam looks at them, Eliza is playing with a plastic, toy wolf inside.

            "What happened?" Sam asks. "Why is she distressed?"

           "She's pregnant, baby's Paul's," Jared replies. "Paul said he wasn't ready for the responsibility."

          "He could've used protection," Sam states. "Wyn, you and the baby and those kids are always, and I mean ALWAYS welcome here, okay?"

           Wynonna pulls away from the beta and she smiles. "Thank you, Sam. This is certainly a Christmas to remember, huh?"

          Jared snorts. "Yeah. Merry Christmas, Nona."

          "Uncle Charlie, can we talk?" Wynonna asks as she and the kids eat Christmas dinner with him.

             "Of course," Charlie replies before taking a swig of his beer, Nigel is eating his deviled eggs that Wyn made. "What's going on?"

              "In the middle of November, I kind of... got with one of the rez boys," Wynonna states. "And I'm pregnant."

                Charlie smiles at her warmly. "I needed some happy news." He glances toward the ceiling and sighs, then back to his niece. "Congratulations, Wynonna. You're an amazing mother, and I can't wait to meet the newest family member."

           "Thank you, uncle Charlie," Wynonna replies. "Let's finish eating?"

           Charlie nods and they dig back into the food on their plates.
