It was midnight by the time I woke up but no matter how much I tossed and turned, I just couldn't find the right position to fall back asleep. A lingering haze of sleep was sitting somewhere in the back of my mind. Too far for me to retrieve. I did everything I could possibly think of, counting sheep, imagine things and humming to myself. Finally, I resorted to rewinding today (or yesterday's) events. But my grin faded away as soon as I thought about the pit with Gally in it. Is it cold down there?
Groaning, I tumbled out of my hammock and tripped over air; and fell face first onto the wooden floor. I rubbed my nose as I walk silently out of my room, stopping once in a while when I heard one of the boys shift in their sleep. It was surprisingly easy to sneak out and for a moment I wondered where I've gotten the ability to walk like a cat. Again with the random vocabularies that venture into my brain whenever they want to. I remember what a cat looks like and that was it. No memories about who told me it was a cat and no memories of me playing with one.
I made my way towards the slammer and approached it cautiously as if Gally would suddenly jump out from nowhere and yell in my face. I've seen him around the glade; he wasn't the friendliest person around. I peeped in and immediately saw a silhouette lying still inside of it. Wow, he kept his word.
"Gally! Gal!" I whispered loudly. He groaned and tossed in his sleep before letting the snores continue.
"Gally wake up!" I said, a bit louder this time. But the idiot continued to sleep. "Gally the bloody builder!" He groaned and hit some imaginary bug in the air.
"Gally you're such a bloody pig." I muttered darkly under my breath before rolling my eyes at him.
"What did you say about me greenie?" I nearly jumped out of my skin as soon as another voice started talking. Gally had already sat up and was glaring at me and I glared back in return.
"I called you a bloody pig." I repeated myself as I scoffed. "I called you by your name and you didn't hear me but when I said you're a bloody pig you woke up. What in the world is wrong with you?"
"What do you want greenie? Thought you should be in bed right now? Didn't Alby or Newt warn you about the grievers?" Gally scowled at me. "And it's Captain Gally."
"They did and about that, it's none of your business!" I smiled sweetly before growling at him. "No one tells me what to do. What are you, five?"
"I don't care greenie. Just go back to bed- Wait, you don't have one." Gally mocked me.
"I think sleeping in a hammock's cool and I woke up in the middle of the night to tell you to get your shuck butt back into the Homestead." Gally's was about to say something; most likely bark out commands when I added, "You kept your word and I respect you for that."
Silence.
"Gal?" I called out quietly, my voice firm.
"Go back to sleep greenie. A deal's a deal." Gally replied coldly before lying back down with his back facing me this time. He didn't look comfortable sleeping on the ground at all. Shrugging, I stood up and began to walk back towards the Homestead. Instead of going back into my room, I had an idea.
When I was back inside of the Homestead, I slinked from room to room, opening each doors and shutting them swiftly when I noticed it was occupied. Frypan was lying in a weird angle and mumbling about 'No raiding my kitchen!', Zart had drool at the side of his face and Winston had his arms folded across his chest. I nearly let out a yelp when I opened Alby's door, if I haven't caught glimpse of his eyes that were shut, I'd thought he was still awake.
"Alby scares the daylights out of me," I mumbled as I opened the next door; suddenly irritated searching for Gally's room. I nearly burst out laughing when I found Minho. He wasn't wearing a shirt, exposing his muscles nicely. But what really got my attention was his upper body was out of his hammock and that he was hanging upside down. I crept towards him and whispered at his ear. "You look so stupid sleeping like this Minho."
