"Need some help on that, greenie?"
I tried not to shiver but did move a couple of inches away from the source of the voice after it spoke. It was a stranger, heck, basically, everyone in the glade is a stranger to me, but at least I know who Newt, Alby, Minho and Frypan are. They're the only ones who treat me as equals so far. I like Newt the best, he gives me my space and helps if I asked for it. Otherwise, he lets me do my own thing and leaves me be, but he's always nearby, which gives me the assurance that he's looking after me even when he's a distance away and has his own line of work to do. He even got me a side job from Frypan when I complained I was bored! It took time convincing the cook, and Frypan gave me the bluntest knife he could find in the kitchen because he was afraid I would slice off my fingers since I wasn't able to 'see'.
I'm starting to trust whatever information I've been fed by these boys more, as everything they've been telling me lines up with the situation we're stuck in. However, I didn't associate much with the rest of the boys that were around the glade. Partially, I wasn't interested in befriending the rest of the boys, and another part of me prefers to be alone when I'm not around Newt or Minho.
"Nope. I'm fine on my own." I replied emotionlessly as I cut the potatoes into cubes, carefully and slowly like how I assume a blind person would do.
The bench I was sitting on creaks at the extra weight as the boy sat down, "You're too slow, Frypan will lose his head if you're not finished cutting these up by the time he's done preparing sandwiches for the runners." The boy persisted, trying to save the dying conversation. "Here, let me help."
He seemed to have interpreted my silence as the green light to let him help me with the task I was going. In annoyance, I elbowed him in the face when he leaned towards me to grab my hands. The boy cursed and held his face with his hands, his eyes squeezing themselves at the pain that was wrecking through his face. I sniggered at his state whilst chopping the last of the potatoes as I watch him through the reflection of a cup. He made a move to grab my hair, but stopped mid-way.
I had almost reached out to block his hand if I hadn't been starring ahead of me as well. Newt was waltzing over to where the boy and I were at, a frown starting to crease on his forehead.
"Newt! Greenie elbowed me in the face!" The boy complained immediately with a groan.
I shrugged. "He was literally asking for it."
"You deserved it, I saw what you were trying to do." Newt glared at the boy harshly, and the boy cowered from his gaze whilst dropping his hands from his face. "Alby will hear about this."
I guessed the boy's eyes widening in panic as he stood up hastily, "Come on Newt, I didn't break any rules. If anything, she did! She hit me!"
"In case you weren't informed, slinthead, which I doubted, no one touches the girl, Alby's orders. Get back to your post and don't let me catch you again." Newt narrow his eyes threateningly at him. Without another word and a quick nod, the boy ran off.
"I bet he klunked in his pants." I giggled at Newt.
"How are you, Rosie? Alright with the task?" He sits down opposite me and watches my fingers warily. If anything, I think he looks more prepared to shoot his hand out to stop me if I do happen to push the knife down in the wrong direction than interested in what I'm doing.
"I'm good, wish Frypan gives me a sharp knife instead of this bloody blunt one." I gave him a wide smile.
"I rather not." Newt pursed his lips. "Don't want you losing any body parts."
"This part feels weird." I commented as I felt about the structure of a carrot. To test out my theory, I had purposefully placed my finger where the knife could certainly cut through when it's being pushed down, I saw Newt's eyes widen. "Oh well, you only live once."
