"The one that you just stood up is Draco Malfoy. His family is the most respected pureblood family."
After the first years, I think they're called, were also sorted, Dumbledore gave a speech, and a huge feast was spread across the long table. It was honestly a dream come true and part of me still didn't believe it. I was sitting next to a boy with light brown hair and brown eyes.
"I'm Theodore." His face was stuffed with food as he spoke and stuck out his hand.
"Y/N." I grabbed his hand and shook it. He smiled at me and continued to stuff his face with food making me let out a light laugh as I took a bite of the soft mashed potatoes.
"So, why did you come late? We rarely get newcomers."
"Well, honestly, I don't even know. I got a letter today and here I am. It all happened so fast it feels like a dream." I responded to his question.
"You must be special if Dumbledore wanted you here so badly." I laughed at him knowing that wasn't true.
I heard someone yell from further down the table. "Theodore come sit over here." They shouted. I looked up to see where it came from. I couldn't tell who said it but it seemed like a group of boys and a few girls said it.
they look like the popular kids
I thought to myself as I looked back down at my food and shuffled it around with my fork.
"Sorry. Got to go." Theodore said as he slapped my shoulder and stood up to walk over to them leaving me alone. I felt out of place. I was going to be the awkward new kid who didn't believe anything anyone told her.
'Psst. Psstttt.'
I looked at where the noise was coming from and a girl was waving me over. She was also sitting alone so I picked up my plate and walked over there awkwardly.
"You're new?" She asked as I set my stuff down in front of her.
"Yeah. I am." I said quietly trying not to embarrass myself someway.
"Well, I'm Tracey Davis. I don't have too many friends here and Ithought we could both use one." She said with a smile and I completely agreed.
"Agreed. I'm Y/N Hartwood." I let out a breath of relief and the two of us started talking and getting to know each other.
---
The meal had ended and everyone started to stand up as I looked around confused.
"Oh, right you're new." Tracey seemed to mentally slap herself as she realized I didn't know what to do. "Everyones going to their common rooms." She informed me.
"Common room?" I asked confused. We're those like dorms or something?
"They're like- Just follow me." I stood up and walked next to Tracey. The two of us walked down some stone stairs and the light started to get dimmer and dimmer until the only source of light was flickering candles on the side of the walls casting luminous shadows in the stairwell.
It was quiet except for the conversation Tracey and I were sharing and our footsteps on the stone.
"Where are we going?" I asked eventually as it seemed the stairs were going on forever.
"The Slytherin common room. It's down in the dungeon."
"Oh. Pleasent." I said sarcastically. It was peaceful, well until we heard voices and loud footsteps approach from further up the stairs.
I turned around to see who was coming and it was the group that Theodore previously joined. The group didn't stop and one of the members nudged my shoulder roughly with his to move me out of the way.
