"The girl collapsed on the ground, her fingers twitching."
We ran away as quickly as we could the second our body's touched the cold floor. No matter the penalty something was stopping me from giving the Dark Lord Harry. Dignity? No that was lost long ago.
We ran and we ran, once again our hands tightly interlocked. The damage done inside was nothing compared to what we were about to witness.
The two of us stopped short, in front of a pile of rubble from the cement walkway. Spells were being thrown. Fire was crackling. Death Eaters and giants were taking no mercy on any student. No matter the age. One huge giant was swinging a weapon around knocking down anyone he could.
Draco's breath became raggedy as he shuddered out breaths.
"We- we've got to go, love," Draco said. A slow tear fell down my cheek and to the ground. People I knew were dead on the floor. Not breathing. Eyes open, the last moments of their life flickering through them like a dying candle.
I didn't move, my feet became cement to the ground as Draco tried pulling me away. Eventually, he did but a cry ripped through the air. Yes, cries were going off everywhere. But this one was different. This one was familiar.
I whipped back around, searching frantically for who made it. Then my eyes laid upon the person. She was right in front of me.
I wanted to scream for her to run to me but my voice got caught in my throat, letting nothing out but a whimper.
"Please..." She dropped her wand to the floor in surrender. Draco came up behind me and when he saw what I was seeing he faltered in his steps.
The Death Eater right in front of her flickered her eyes to us like she knew how much the girl meant to me. Then her brown eyes flickered to mine, a slight smile forming on her face. Before she spoke the last words she would ever speak.
"Oh, Y/N... welcome ho-"
"AVADA KEDAVRA!" The words were drawn out almost in slow motion. I cried out, jumping over the pile of ruble running towards the falling girl. The blast hit her right in the chest, pushing her back a few feet. The Death Eater ran in the opposite direction but I wasn't going to chase her down.
The girl collapsed on the ground, her fingers twitching. I skidded on my knees beside her, holding her back up. "Hey, hey, hey." I soothed. Her eyes sparkled one last time before the warm light in her eyes flickered out. Death, a permanent reflection in her eyes.
"no," I whispered, tears now burning my skin like the fire I just barely escaped. I felt strong arms wrap around me, pulling me up and away. I struggled against them. Trying to get back to the girl. But the harder I tried, the harder Draco's grip around me tightened and pulled me farther and farther away from the dead girl's body. From Tracey's.
I let my body go limp as he continued to drag me away, my eyes never leaving Tracey. Draco set me down against something, letting me sit for a moment. He sat in front of me. Just like at our tree.
He didn't say anything for the longest time. He just let me cry and sob and curse. Then he wrapped his arms around me. "Merlin, love. I'm so sorry." He whispered, letting tears fall from his eyes as well.
It had happened all over again. I thought Cedric was the last person I was going to lose. But now I lost Tracey. A growing concern for Theo pitted itself in my stomach. But right before I could get up and find him, Voldemort's words tore through my ears like a screech.
"You have fought valiantly. But in vain. I do not wish this. Every drop of magical blood spilled is a terrible waste." I clamped my hands over my ears. I didn't want to hear it. I wanted to be done. To be done with the war. Done with it all. "I Therefore command my forces to retreat. In their absence, dispose of your dead with dignity. Harry Potter. I now speak directly to you. On this night you have allowed your friends to die for you rather than face me yourself. There is no greater dishonor. Join me in the forbidden forest and confront your fate. If you do not do this, I shall kill every last man woman, and child who tries to conceal you from me."
Was that it? Was it over? I looked at Draco, a gleam of happiness that was once lost came through.
"It's over." He said, grabbing my cheeks and pulling me into a kiss. "It's over." He whispered into it.
We started laughing as he pulled me up. Yes, everything was destroyed around me. But no more pain and suffering past tonight. We were done working for the lord. So long as Harry went to Voldemort.
Then I remembered Theo. "Just go." Draco nodded his head at me, must've known my expression. "I have to check on my family. I'll meet you back here."
I nodded and ran off to find Theo. Maybe the twins?
