"To hell with them. I wanted to say goodbye to you."
I don't know how long I roamed the halls looking for someone. Anyone. But it had been a while. As I approached the great hall, I heard voices.
I walked closer and creaked open the door to find the room filled with students. I entered the room and stayed by the door by myself since every other spot was filled.
The room had a heaviness attached to it as it was almost overwhelming.
"Today we acknowledge a really terrible loss." I saw Dumbledore sitting in a chair. He wasn't holding his posture as usual and his eyes drooped with sadness.
"Cedric Diggory was, as you all know, exceptionally hard-working," Tears that I had pushed down just minutes before started to come back to surface at the mention of him.
"Infinitely fair-minded, and most importantly a fierce, fierce friend." I smiled at the recognition of him but my heart and soul still wept.
"Now, I think, therefore, you have the right to know exactly how he died." Finally, some answers. I awaited the response to something I didn't know if I wanted to hear or not. "You see... Cedric Diggory was murdered." I let out a sharp gasp as I covered my mouth with my hands clasping over each other. "by Lord Voldemort!" Wait, I thought he was dead? I thought someone had killed him? "The ministry of Magic does not wish me to tell you this. But, not to do so, I think, would be an inslut to his memory." He announced. A few people looked back at me but no one said anything.
The silence of the room became heavier and heavier as the speech went on. It was completely silent but yet, it was the loudest thing I've ever heard.
"Now, the pain.... we all feel at this dreadful loss reminds me, reminds us, while we may come from different places and speak in different tongues, our hearts beat as one. In light of recent events, the bonds of friendship we've made this year will be more important than ever. Remember that, and Cedric Diggory will not have died in vain." No matter how strong I had been before to hide the pain was gone. Tears burned at my cheeks and my heart shattered. I lost the only person who I had considered family since I came here. "You remember that. And we'll celebrate a boy who was kind and honest and... brave and true right to the very end."
----
Everyone started to leave the room and I did as well. I didn't know where my friends were but I didn't want to bother them anymore. I would feel bad if I burdened them with this.
I walked to the common room to pack since it was the last day before summer. Where would I go? I have no idea.
After packing all my stuff up, I walked back down and went to the library. I'm guessing everyone was doing something different because the hallways were empty.
"Y/N! Y/N, wait." I heard a voice coming closer to me. I turned around to see who it was.
"Harry?" I was confused on why he wanted to see me.
"Yeah. Look I just wanted to say I understand what your going through. And I have something for you." Raising an eyebrow I followed his hand into his pocket and when it came back out it was a letter.
I took it slowly from him. "What's this?"
"Dumbledore gave it to me after they searched what Cedric had on him. He had that. I don't know why he gave it to me since it's addressed to you but I thought you should have it." I smiled at the gesture before gingerly putting it into the back pocket of my jeans. "Well, I'll leave you alone now." He turned to leave.
"Wait, Harry." I stopped him before he got to far. "Are you ok? You know with this thing going on. I mean you did just battle you-know-who and saw someone die in front of your eyes." I chuckled a little bit.
"Well, in that case, no I'm not ok. But what's new?" He said with a smile. "Here, come on. People are saying their goodbye's." He lead me to the courtyard as I finally knew where everyone had escaped too. Everyone was giving each other hugs and saying goodbye. Harry and I walked through the covered part and smiled when we each saw our friends.
After everyone had lined up to say goodbye to the champions and their schools. Harry stayed under the stone covering as I sprinted to my friends.
"Y/N!" Tracey yelled as she noticed me. Theo turned at the mention of me and a smile spread onto his face. We engulfed each other into a group hug. "Are you ok?" Tracey frowned.
"Yeah," I lied.
"I'm going to miss you. Promise to write, right?"
"I'll see." I chuckled. I looked over her shoulders at the Slytherin who was standing by his friends and leaning on a wall. As we made eye contact we looked away quickly.
"Oh, shit. I've got to go." Theo said and Tracey agreed. They both ran to the departing group as I stayed in my spot not knowing where to go. Draco and his group walked by me to leave as well.
Pansy eyed me with a nasty and I noticed Draco start to slow down so his group wouldn't notice. I rolled my eyes and started to walk away as he tries to come closer.
"Now, don't leave." Draco whined as he ran to catch up to me getting in front of me.
"Draco your friends are leaving you." I was trying to have no contact with him whatsoever so if he could leave that would be great.
"To hell with them. I wanted to say goodbye to you." He said as he turned me back around to face him.
"Well then, goodbye Malfoy." I said and once again entered the castle walls leaving him standing alone once more.
I noticed someone standing at the end of the empty halls and I walked closer to them. Dumbledore.
"Ah, Miss. Hartwood." He knew it was me without even glancing at me. "I suspect you've gotten the letter then?" He questioned politely.
"Yeah. I did." I said solemnly. "Doesn't change the fact he's gone." My voice cracked with sadness once more as the events of that night flashed through my mind.
"You think he's gone?" He said a little shocked. "The dead may not be living but they can never be gone as long as we keep them safe. Safe in here." He stuck a finger out and pointed to my heart. I smiled weakly. The night still flashing in my mind until I came upon a peculiar memory. The mirror. I wanted to know what it was about and Dumbledore would definitely know.
"Can I ask you a question?" I piped up making him smile.
"Of course."
"I came across something not long ago. It was a mirror of some sort but it was broken I'm guessing. It didn't show me just one reflection but two. And only one belonged to me." A big smile spread across his face.
"Ahh, yes. Now who else was in the mirror?"
Draco.
"Just someone." I said keeping who it actually was a secret.
He nodded his head slowly chuckling quietly.
"You came across the mirror of the erised. A tricky thing that is. The mirror shows you what your heart truly desires." My face drops slowly and my eyebrows furrow.
"Yeah, so the mirror was definitely broken." I snapped again refusing the believe it.
"Right. Well, have a good summer, Hartwood. I've arranged for you to stay with Amos. Better catch the train before it's to late."
"Really?"
"Yeah, now go."
I smiled largely at the new and I took his advice. I ran to catch up to the people boarding the train and made it just in time.
