You stopped of at the matter drive, making sure the pting hadn't already found its way to the large supply of energy that was the only thing keeping you from being alive and being dead. "That is a beauty of an anti-matter drive. What century is this?" You admired the workmanship on the drive taking in its components with a long gaze. You stepped up to the podium to take a closer look.
"Are you joking?" Cicero asked with a serious tone and straight smile. You let your hands find its way to the glass taking in the vibrations beheath them.
"No. We travel in Time." You strugged still making wide eyed at the beauty infront of you. You caught Missy's face through the glass casing, only making the sight better. The Lumiat a couple inches beside her, watching you with the same admirating look from Missy. They both seemed to have the same calm posture but Missy seemed more on edge, a small strand of hair freely fell to her cheek, that only made you look closer at the time lady's features, her lipstick a dark red but her cheeks were almost the same shade, looking sideways at the Lumiat and following her gentle gaze to you. Ah how sweet Missy's jealous, you couldn't help but struggle to keep a smirk of your face.
"67th." You could hear that the drone had answered.
"Guess still a bit old school for you guys then but damn It's beautiful. Anti-matter powering the movement of matter. I love it. Conceptually, and actually." You didn't take your eyes of Missy as you spoke But you had to turn to Yaz, you couldn't keep getting distracted "Yaz, you have to keep this safe from the Pting. If this drive gets destroyed, this ship will lose propulsion, we'll drift endlessly while the Pting..."
Yaz butted in already taking her jacket off to somewhat get in position. "I get it. It won't be good." She goes to take one of the stunners and powers it up. It still surprises you that the doctor found a bunch of weirdos who didn't seem to be frightened about the scary monsters and aliens and she still managed to make use of their skills.
"Ronan can stay with you." The general added, gesturing to the drone.
"No, General, my responsibility is to..."
"Ronan, you're able to touch it without it toxifying you. That's useful to all of us, including me." She commanded handing him the last stunner.
You addressed Yaz once again and handed her a wrapped up blanket that had caught your attention on the way. "You might need this. MedBlanket. Sterilised barrier, 67th century technology. In case you need to pick anything up, just stay safe yaz, the doctor wouldn't let me live if I didn't protect you all."
"You know she's too soft for that" she smiled taking the blanket.
You smiled again before turning on your heels to see the last four without a position. "You guys with me!" You ordered jogging out the room.
"Ah there you guys are. Pting presence denied, strike two. One left. See this! A more direct route. Obviously, fast-moving asteroids and debris to avoid on the way, which is presumably why the systems wanted to avoid it. Now, if I can rig up a cover signal back to Resus One..." you started looking at the out of breath humans and the time ladies who caught up."I'm a neuro pilot. My expertise is in symbiotic neuro-piloting, pulse systems at a push, but not this." Cicero added following your train of thought about driving it manually out of the belt.
"I could make a rig out of this chamber." Her brother added going on to argue about it, he took out his tool already looking about.
Missy approached you causing you to smile, "are you sure about this love?" She whispered gesturing to the arguing siblings behind her with her head.
"Ah your not losing faith in me are we?" You smirked softly kissing her on the forehead. "Missy trust me, it's going to work out"
Before she could reply dirkas turns your attention back to him. "How long have I got?"
"Literally? No time at all." You responded causing missy to frown and step back. You could never really tell what she was thinking but you just suspected that she was bored like always.
"Give me some space to work. Hey you there, give me a hand?" He asked looking over at the Lumiat who already had her jacket sleeves rolled up, she gave a small nod and got to work.
You let Missy roll her eyes and gaze out at the stars, you would hope that when you got back she would be more useful. You took Cicero out of the room, it was about time to discover the truth about what you had overheard earlier. "Why are you on this ship, General?"
"Corton fever. Contracted it on my last duty. Can't quite shake it." You let her speak you could already hear her heart beat spiking, you were really good with liars it seemed but take out your stethoscope again but this time to listen to Cicero's chest whilst taking her pulse with your spare hand.
"What are you doing?" She asked but didn't move her wrist.
"Why would you be using adrenaline blockers for corton fever?" You asked rasing a brow and listening closely to the heart.
"How do you know about the blockers?"
"Your slow pulse, they also never suspect my really good hearing, seem to be really good at that lately. Anyway You asked Ronan for some. It isn't corton fever, is it. Is it pilot's heart?" You asked letting your fingers fall from her pulse point with a small frown.
"I started as a pulse pilot. I graduated to Neuro Fleet Commander faster than anyone in Keeban history. I'm the most decorated general. I'm the poster woman. I cannot have pilot's heart. I cannot be that example to others." She shook her head softly looking away from your gaze.
"But you have. And you've been using more and more blocker shots to get through the day." You added looking straight towards her trying to get her to look at you as you spoke softly.
"Trying to control the surges of adrenaline around the heart. One big surge could kill me."
"I'm sorry. Does Durkas know?" You asked thinking about her brother who just moments ago acted like everything was fine.
Her frown only agreed to your suspicion. "He's going to find out sooner or later."But he had to walk in the conversation at that point didn't he? "He already has. Not that he's surprised, just... disappointed. We don't have time now. I've rigged a primitive piloting bypass, combining pulse and neuro..."
"I'll do it." You added warning both their attention with a shocked expression.
"Ever flown that way?" The general asked.
"No, not been the best at flying a ship that doesn't have a Conscience but you could talk me through it." You smiled, trying to find another way from keeping everyone alive, even if it was only this once.
"It takes people a dozen years to train." She just frowned crossing her arms. "I know how to do this. I'm not stopping now. Everyone's going to live. Including me!" You just really hoped she was telling the truth.
