Chapter 6: Not quite

She has cancer.

She has cancer.

She has cancer.

How can this be true.

I don't believe it.

I must've heard it wrong.

All these thoughts ran through Oikawa's mind. Driving back home he had so many questions he wanted to ask Iwaizumi about Isuzu's condition but he knew he'd never answer them. At least not to him. Who can answer his questions? Who?

Makki.

The name came into his head. Makki must know. Halfway to his house, he decided to go to Makki's place. He didn't think of whether he'd be home or not. He just wanted answers. He wanted to know all that had happened to Iwaizumi in the past 8 years he'd missed out on, due to his own stupid mistakes.

Standing outside Makki's house he rang the bell hoping he'd be home. It's a Saturday he'd probably be home. He thought to himself.

Ring the bell for the 5th time he decided to head back to the car.

Just then the door opened to reveal Makki.

"What're you doing here?" Makki asked confused.

"Lemme in I've got some stuff to ask you," Oikawa said before slipping past Makki in the house.

"Ooo I like the new decor," Oikawa said looking around. "Very vintage."

"Thanks." Makki replied, "now what is it you wanted to ask me?"

"You're not gonna offer me something to drink first?" Oikawa asked "so rude." He tsked as him.

"Well, you're an unannounced guest," Makki replied.

"Anyways," Makki rolled his eyes "would you like some tea?"

"Yes, I'd love to but later," Oikawa replied walking towards the nearest sofa in the lounge.

Plopping down he looked up at the ceiling sighing.

"I knew Iwaizumi would get married and start a family someday." He sighed once again.

"But I didn't expect it to be the way it is" he looked at Makki making him uncomfortable.

"A...Oikawa you okay?" Makki asked concerned.

"I don't know, Makki. I don't know." Oikawa shook his head.

"I don't know what to do!" Oikawa buried his face into his hands. "I didn't expect to bump into him on my visit home, I didn't expect him to be married to some chick, I didn't expect him to have a child and now I get to know she's got cancer."

"Not quite," Makki spoke.

"What do you mean? She was getting chemotherapy at the hospital." Oikawa said confused by what makki meant.

"She's got Lymphoma," Makki told him sitting across from him.

"What's Lymphoma?" Oikawa asked Makki.

"It's an infection that affects the fighting cells of the immune system," Makki explained to Oikawa.

"So it's not cancer?" Oikawa asked still confused.

"Well," makki started "it's a type of cancer."

"It's still cancer!"

Makki went quiet for a bit.

"Hello, Makki??"

"Yeah, I was trying to recall when it happened to her," Makki replied to Oikawa finally.

"Ah yes!" He clapped his hands together. "It was almost over a year back if I'm correct."

"A year!?!?" Oikawa exclaimed.

"Don't worry it's curable." Makki told Oikawa "it's way better than what it was six months back."

Makki recalled when they discovered that Isuzu had Lymphoma. The expression on Iwaizumi's face. He could never forget because that was the day he for the first time heard Iwaizumi crying. Iwaizumi didn't know Makki heard him crying in the hospital bathroom. When he came to call him.

"He's been having to deal with Isuzu's illness for over a year," Oikawa said more to himself.

"Suzuki left him around that time too."

"Suzuki?"

"His wife."

"Oh..." Oikawa further questioned, "why did they split though?"

"They didn't exactly split."

"What do you mean?"

"She just left him."

"I don't follow" Oikawa was very confused right now.

"Iwaizumi was at work and she was home with Isuzu." He stated "she said she was going to the grocery store to Isuzu and basically She never came back."

"She left him just like that??"

"Not exactly their marriage had been going well just up until Isuzu was diagnosed," Makki told Oikawa.

"Their marriage was due to Isuzu." Makki looked at Oikawa seriously.

"What do you mean."

"You may not remember properly but Suzuki was one of our classmates in high school."

"WHAT??!"

"Yeah," Makki rubbed the back of his head. "They basically started going out after you left...after you two fought to be precise."

"It can't be due to that." Oikawa shook his head. "He's an idiot. He's a complete utter idiot."

"They meet at a bar." Makki continued. "Iwaizumi wasn't at his best at the time and she'd gone through somewhat of a bad relationship too." Makki took a glimpse as Oikawa to see if he's listening. He was. Wide awake.

"They met a few times. I asked Iwaizumi if he liked her he says said she's okay and they're just friends." He sighed. "What I didn't know was they were friends with benefits."

This made everything going on in Oikawa's head come to a halt.

Friends. With. Benefits.

"They eventually went their own ways but a month or so later Iwaizumi got a call from her telling him she was pregnant."

Oikawa was gawking now. He shook that Iwaizumi was playing hooky and when he stopped it was too late.

"They wanted to keep the baby. So they got married."
