Jessie was not in a good mood. I could tell that easily.

"Jess... whats wrong..?" I asked softly. It was just the two of us. Error was at work, Club was out of town.  The apartment was quiet.

"I miss my dad..." Jessie whispered and then looked up panicked immediately," That's not what I mean! I mean I love you daddy I just.." tears welled up in his eyes.

"Oh Jessie..." I turned the water off and dried my hands. Dishes could wait. "I'm not mad. I know you love me kiddo. It's not bad to miss your dad."

He sniffled. "B-but the man said–"

I gave a stern look. "Jess what did I say about that..?"

"The man doesn't control me...?" Jessie wiped his eyes.

"That's right. Now how about you tell me about your dad okay?" I pulled him into my lap.

"Well he was big and strong. He wrestled fires!!" Jessie grinned. He had clearly looked up to his father.

I laughed softly. "You mean he was a firefighter?"

"Yeah that! And he had this neato necklace. It was like a scorpion but inside plastic. He said his mom gave it to him when he was little." Jessie sighed and nuzzled close. "I was supposed to get it when I got bigger."

And that's how I ended up at the police station with Jess on my shoulders. I strutted up to the desk. "Hello my name is Fresh Queen. I am the legal guardian of Jessie Hill. His father's case was handles here..."

   The cop looked up. "Yes..?"

"I was just wondering if there were any of his belongings left. Jessie wants to retrieve something." I held Jessie tight so he didn't fall.

The cop hummed snd disappeared into the back room. He returned with a box. "That's all of it."

The box was small. What could they have done with the rest? I carefully set Jessie down and rummaged through the stuff.

Something caught my eye. It was a pendant of a scorpion caught in resin. That's the one. I tugged it out. "This it kiddo?"

Jessie grinned and made grabby hands. "Yes!!"

I smiled and draped it around his neck. " There ya go." I stood up straight again. "Do I need to like sign anything for it?"

"Jessie technically owns all of these things. You can take all of it and look through it later." The cop pushed the box forward a bit.

I nodded and picked the box up. "Come on kiddo. We'll pick up some food on the way home. Then we'll make uncle Error some dinner."

Jessie looked up from fiddling with his necklace. "Okay Daddy." He was definitely in a better mood now. I did good.
