(How's THAT for a title, huh?)
You dismount your Chocobo uncertainly and take a good look around. "We're here." Your bird squawks, and shys away from your destination, but you quickly grab his reins before he gets away.
"I know this place has bad news written all over it, Fluffy." The Chocobo rolls his eyes and caws, as you pat his feathers. "But look on the bright side. With the money we'll get from the stuff here, you'll have greens for weeks!"
Fluffy stops, and seemingly considers the opportunity of endless food before slowly walking up beside you. You smile and pat the bird on the head. "That's a good boy." Even so, as the two of you look toward the town, a bad feeling enters your gut.
But you suck it up and grit your teeth. "I steal for a living, and we need that living. Let's move!" Fluffy and you head into town, and the second you cross the threshold, the bad feeling begins to burn through your entire body.
"This town." You think, glancing around at the still structures. It was completely abandoned, and had been for quite some time, since Shinra had fallen. "It was called...Nibelheim, right, Fluffy?"
At the word "Nibelheim", a chill runs through you. Rumors about this place abounded everywhere, your customers speaking of ghosts asleep in coffins and fires caused by angels. The story about fire was true, Nibelheim had burned down seven years ago, but the rest of it?
"That's a load of garbage." You roll your eyes and continue on, scanning the silent buildings for anything that could raise a profit.
After about twenty minutes, you've reached the mansion at the end of the village, and have found nothing, minus a couple of copper wires and a dead rat or two. Fluffy squawks in defeat and plops his golden feathers down on the ground, but you're not so easily convinced.
"Come on, buddy. The good stuff is inside this place, I can feel it!" You whisper soothingly. But, Fluffy won't budge. You sigh and shrug. "Okay, Fluff.. Wait here. I'll be back in a few minutes, hopefully with something." The bird nuzzles you on the neck, before plopping down on the grass a ways away and fluttering his feathers.
You yawn, and walk inside the mansion, marveling at the total size and glory of it. Even after being burned down, the building still had such grace. "Where to start?" You muse, glancing around.
A sudden draft blows through the abandoned building, causing you to shiver and wrap your jacket around you. "Where did that come from?" You ask no one in particular.
Almost as a response, a door creaks open, leading down into darkness. You look at it, worry running through you. "That's probably where they're hiding the good stuff." You mutter, wandering over to the open abyss. "Well, I guess you only live once."
And with that, you clambered down the stairs, darkness overshadowing everything, until you came to an open wide room. There was something good in there, you can feel it. "Where's that stupid flashlight-" You mumble, fumbling around in your bag. "Ah!"
The light clicked on, and the first thing you saw was a line of coffins. A whole lot of coffins. There must've been twenty or more, just laid out in neat, dusty rows. "What sort of town has coffins-oh wait this is a Shinra building." You mutter to yourself, wandering between the caskets. "They must've spread the ghost rumor to keep people out of here."
A sigh escapes your throat. "Looks like I'm going back to Fluffy emptyhanded. The food situation is gonna be rough the next few days." You turn around, when a noise distracts you.
There's a creaking coming from one of the coffins. You stop in fear and reach to your leg, where you keep your knife. "Is that a monster?" A whisper to calm yourself, when suddenly the lift of the coffin flies off, causing you to scream and through your flashlight away.
