A cold wind blew through the forest, causing you to shiver. It was close to midnight, and instead of being holed up in a warm inn, you're wandering the woods. No thanks to your car breaking down.
Not exactly a good place for a medicine professional to be but you couldn't help it.
"The town is only a few miles away." You repeat to yourself, trying to soothe your frayed nerves. "The town is only a few mI-"
Something appeared in your path, and you tripped, falling to the ground with a disgraceful thump. "Owwww." A groan escapes your throat, as you squint to see what you tripped over. "Stupid log."
The unknown thing was long and stringy, part of it on your leg, and it was very cold. Muttering, you fumbled for your flashlight. "For the love of-there!" You clicked the light on, and screamed.
It was no log blocking the path. There was a corpse laying on the ground, a slimy, disgusting corpse that was rotting quickly. You backed away, whimpering, when you suddenly felt something on the back of your neck.
A powerful, striking pain, and then darkness. The last thing you heard was repeated whispering.
***
Everything hurt. Absolutely everything. You blearily opened your eyes to see that you under a blanket, laying on a cot in a small wooden cabin. Your medical supplies were still in their box, unceremoniously dropped on a small night table beside the bed.
And your leg was tied to the wall, wrapped tightly with powerful, twisted rope. It was digging into your skin, and it ached quite a bit.
You glanced across the room to see that the corpse you had tripped over was laying on the floor, still rotting. Who keeps a corpse in a house?"
A loud sound interrupted your train of thought, and you looked up. Something was flapping its wings outside the house and it caused more thoughts to enter your mind. What sort of bird makes that much noise?
The door to the cabin bangs open, and a man steps through. He looks to be a few years older than you are, with scruffy brown hair, a long red jacket, and a face that just screamed loneliness. You feel yourself sweat as he shoots you a glare with glowing turquoise eyes.
"What were you doing in the mountains at midnight?" He asked slowly, crossing his arms. You bit your lip. "I got lost." Your voice was wavering.
"I don't believe you. You're lying." He snaps, stamping his foot on the ground. "You wanted to steal what belongs to ME!" You blink, confused out of your mind. "What makes you think I want a rotting corpse?"
That hit a nerve. "HE ISN'T DEAD!" The man screamed, a huge monstrous black wing sprouting from his back. You cowered backwards, just noticing the sword on his belt.
Then, just like that, he stops, evidently seeing your fear. Without another word, he turns around and storms out, the wing vanishing as quickly as it appeared. You lay back down on the cot, hyperventilating. "What I am going to do?" You whisper, trying to calm yourself down. Then you thought of something.
Digging through your medical supplies, you found your somewhat dull scalpel, and got to work, trying to saw through the rope. It was barely working, and after about twenty minutes with only a microscopic bit of the rope snapped, you gave up, placing the scalpel to the side. "I guess I could go to sleep." You mumble to yourself.
And with that, you decided that was the best idea.
***
A loud flapping noise awoke you from your nap, and you sat up, hunger and thirst, not to mention fear, overriding every part of your body. The bird's back.
