RICKY POV

"You ready bud?" My dad asked from the driver seat. We were driving to my mom and Todd's house because I was spending a week there while my dad goes on a vacation.

"It's not fair that you get to go on a trip without me." I whined.

My dad gave me his stern eyes from the rear view mirror. "I wish I could bring you Ricky. But it's work. All boring business meetings and no fun. Besides you have school. Third grade is fun right? You have Nina."

I cringed. I hate when people call my best friend Nina. It's weird. "Daddy it's Nini, not Nina." I corrected him.

He chuckled. "Right sorry buddy. You have Nini. You guys have been BFF's for 4 years now, I should really start calling her Nini."

I nodded then shifted to look out the window. "So," my dad spoke up again. "I heard that Todd is going to help you with your math? That's exciting."

I gave my dad a death stare. "Hate math. Hate Todd." I mumbled.

"Richard! Do not speak ill of Todd. Him and your Mommy love each other so we need to be nice."

"But they aren't nice to me." I whined.

"They are nice Ricky, just strict. I know the rules are a bit more loose around here, so please be on your best behaviour. You can call me every night and tell me about your day? How does that sound?" My dad asked me.

A smile spread across my face. I haven't smiled since last week when I found out I was staying with my mom and her boyfriend.

The rest of the drive was more quiet. I sat there and twiddled my fingers, anxious for the next 7 days.

"We're here!" My dad cheered as he put the car into park. Tears welled in my eyes. I hated staying here, even if it was just for an overnight. I can't imagine staying here for a full week!

I sluggishly got out of the car and grabbed my backpack while my dad got my overnight bag. I was not looking forward to this week.

Before my dad could even knock on the door, it swung open with two fake smiles standing on the other side.

"Oh my baby!" My mom cheered as she pulled me into a tight hug.

I could see my Dad hand over my bag to Todd and then the tears started pouring out of me.

"Daddy please no!" I cried, but my mom kept hushing me and reassuring me that it will be okay. But we all knew that it wouldn't be okay.

"You'll be fine buddy. I'll be home in 6 sleeps. Later skater." He said then walked away.
