"I thought Tsukishima-kun's joining us for lunch?" Yachi-san asserted bemusedly, laying down a pile of books down our cafeteria table.
I sighed, picking up a piece of rice cake from the small bowl using my wooden chopsticks, "I guess not," I conferred, taking a book in my hand and propping it open to distract myself from thinking about Tsukki instead of actually helping Yachi-san.
Yachi-san shrugged her shoulders, taking her seat in front of me, "If that's the case then I guess we should start working on this," She took out a piece of paper and started writing things, "So, I did my research last night. We could start on something simple like . . ."
Yachi-san's voice suddenly starts to fade. I think it's all in my head but I couldn't seem to concentrate to whatever she was saying.
Is Tsukki mad at me? Did I say somethig wrong yesterday? Will he still invite me for dinner later? I try not to think about it, but he is bizzarely acting strange recently.
Tsukki would usually eat with me during lunch. He doesn't go to our club room during breaks (at all) knowing Hinata-kun, Kageyama-kun, Tanaka-san and Nishinoya-san will be there hanging out and he wouldn't want to interact with their chaotic aura. I know. I really know he was about to say something a while ago. I mean, he wouldn't approach me in the first place if he wasn't going to. Generally, I would be the one who would approach him.
"Yamaguchi-kun!"
If only I could ask him if he's hiding something. Or whatever he's trying to say. I'm actually surprised that he's inviting me for dinner. That's not a normal thing Tsukki would do.
"Yamaguchi-kun, are you okay?" Yachi-san's voice started to perceive, making me come back in reality.
My eyes shot back up, meeting Yachi-san's eyes, eyeing me in confusion, "Are you okay?" She repeated her question with uncertainty, her voice clear as day.
Baffled, I jumped up from my seat and took my bag, "I'm okay! Thank you, Yachi-san! I'll see you in training!" I babbled in a slight panicky manner, abruptly bowing my head towards Yachi-san in appreciation and straightened my posture instantly before scramming my way out of the cafeteria.
"U-Uh . . . Yamaguchi-kun! Wait!" Yachi-san's voice trailed from behind but my legs didn't want to stop. I was way too desperate to know what Tsukki's been wanting to say. What was he trying to say?
I rushed my way almost tripping by the staircase leading to the volleyball's club room. I scurried in a brisk manner as I walk closer to the club room's door, walking closer, I could already hear Hinata and Kageyama's loud bickering.
"You idiot! That was mine!"
"You're too greedy, Kageyama-kun!"
When I finally reached the door, I saw Hinata-kun jumping Kageyama-kun in an aggressive manner, "No fair!" Hinata-kun glowered at Kageyama-kun while he was trying to reach something from Kageyama-kun's hand. A bento box?
"Uh . . . Hi?" I quietly muttered, before letting myself in. I caught Kageyama and Hinata's attention and they paused from arguing.
Hinata pushed Kageyama's hand away from him before standing up to his feet, "Hey, Yamaguchi-kun!" He exclaimed.
Tanaka-san appeared from behind the lockers, "I'm sorry for the mess here. Kageyama and Hinata's fighting over Tsukishima's bento box," He chuckled, rolling his eyes.
"I mean, I would, too," Nishinoya-san intercedes from behind, entering the club room, too, "Well, it is unusually from Tsukishima," He said with mock astonishment.
I was still bewildered, "Tsukki's bento box?" I asked them. Tsukki was not around. I was thinking he'd still be here.
"Yeah! Tsukishima-kun gave us this bento box that's wrapped in a cute animal print cloth. He said he wouldn't be able to finish it all," Hinata-kun effused, but he was, too, confused.
Kageyama-kun stretched his hand to me with the half finished bento box, "Here . . . If you'd want some?" He was hesitant, but waited for me to take it. The bento box had cute Kyaraben style with the half eaten, panda-shaped onigiri.
Hinata chimed in, energetically, "The unagi tasted so good! Oh and karaage!"
Karaage? That's my most favorite food, actually. Tsukki knows that because his mom would usually cook that for me whenever I'm over. Why would Tsukki give lunches to Kageyama and Hinata randomly? That's really nice of him. I mean, I don't mean to sound rude but . . . Anyone would be surprised that he did that.
"Uh, well . . ." Hinata trailed, Hinata's face flushed in embarrassment and scratched the back of his head, "We almost finished the food, though,"
I chuckled in quiet empathy, "It's okay. That's really nice of Tsukki," I beamed at Hinata.
Hinata nodded agreeably, "I almost thought he was trying to poison us," He gulped, shrudding by the thought of it, his enthusiastic tone changing drastically into a frightened tone.
Tanaka-san and Nishinoya-san bursted out laughing, "I mean, you're not wrong!" Tanaka-san snorted and slapped Hinata-kun's back.
I almost choked in my words and laughed together with them. Tsukki would most probably do that.
"Could you at least keep it down when you're talking about me? I could literally hear you by the staircase," Tsukki's voice interrupted our conversation, silencing the two laughing lads, while taking off his shoes before letting himself in.
I fixed my gaze on him as he do so. When he finally took notice of my presence, he looked away abruptly, "I thought you were with Yachi?" Tsukki's voice was cold enough to send shivers down my spine as he manuevered his way to his locker without having his eyes meet mine.
The room's mood quickly shifted when Tsukki entered.
"I'm actually here to . . ." I trailed, I was a bit worried Hinata, Kageyama, Nishinoya-san and Tanaka-san would eavesdrop as I felt their pair of eyes set on us.
Tsukki pushed his glasses up before setting his eyes on mine, raising both his eyebrows, acknowledging me to continue. I suddenly felt insecure. What?
His stare felt intense I had to look away, "I . . . I was gonna ask you if you ate lunch already? Since you didn't . . . Uh . . ." I stuttered, completely distracted by their confused stare. God, stop looking at me.
"Yeah, I already ate," He replied in a gruff manner, looking back at his opened locker to get his red handbag.
The room fell silent. It felt so uncomfortable.
I opened my mouth to speak again but Sugawara-san, Asahi-san and Daichi-san came. Thank God. I honestly wouldn't take it if that eerie silence would go on. I sighed in relief. But only in my head.
We changed into our jersey shorts, getting ready for our training. Tsukki didn't say another word after his reply a while ago. Come on, just talk to me. They all started to proceed down the gymnasium. Kageyama and Hinata started to race on their way there, leaving Tsukki and I alone, as I was about to leave the room, Tsukki's voice followed from behind.
"Yamaguchi," He called out in his monotone voice.
I tried to surpress a smile creeping on my face when I finally heard Tsukki's voice calling my name, "Yeah?" I responded, without sounding unduly curious.
"You're still coming . . . right?"
