Chapter 2: Assignment

The car traffic in Brooklyn woke me up. You can always rely on that instead of an annoying alarm clock. I shift in my bed, looking out the small window in my room, and take a deep breath. I slowly made my way out of Bucky's arms, trying my best not to wake him up.

I got a call yesterday saying that Chief Dooley has an important assignment to give me. I can't afford to be late, since he seemed very stressed when I got the call. I got changed into a dark blue blouse and a black pencil shirt.

I made my way to the bathroom and curled my hair, but then I heard some rustle outside the door. The door giggled opened, and I pointed my curling iron at the door, just revealing Bucky, who was shirtless.

"Woah, it's just me," he chuckles, putting his hand up in a jokingly manner.

"Sorry, you just scared me," I say, pointing the iron away from him, and I unplugged it from the outlet. Bucky came behind me, wrapping his strong arms around me. Bucky was always in good shape, but after he went to the training camp, he came back more toned than ever.

"I thought you were off today," Bucky says, kissing my neck lightly. I melt into the touch, giggling slightly at his affection. He loves to make sure everyone knows that I'm taken, doing everything he can to make every guy in Brooklyn jealous.

"I told you. Howard called an emergency meeting for tonight's Expo," I lied, but he wouldn't know that. It's sad that I've gotten used to lying to him, and Steve. Hopefully they will get to know soon.

I turn around, now facing him. His hair was still messy, but I always preferred his hair this way then it all gelled up. "But I got off from the docks because we were going to spend the day together," he pouts dramatically.

"I know, I know. Well, you can spend the day with Steve. Maybe prevent him from enlisting again," I say, giving him ideas. "Plus, Mr. Stark doesn't need me during the expo, so I'll be all yours then."

"As you should be," Bucky says, pressing his soft lips on mine. I smiled into the kiss, but was interrupted again with the door opening.

"Oh my," I hear Steve's voice say. "This early, really?" Bucky started laughing and I hid my face in his chest, since it was red in embarrassment.

"It was a kiss, Steve. Nothing was going to happen," Bucky says. Steve closes the door, and I hear him mumbling about us needed to leave our business in the bedroom. "The punk always knows how to be a buzzkill."

"Well, in his defense, I wouldn't want to walk in on him and a girl, doing something," I say, shaking my head to get the picture out, and Bucky chuckles. He exited out of the bathroom, and I finished getting ready.

I got out of the bathroom, grabbing my bag, making sure I have everything I need, and the file for Project Rebirth. I walked out of my room, finding Steve and Bucky, who was fully clothed. "I'll see you guys later," I say, and give Bucky a quick kiss. "Love you two."

I hear them both yell that they love me, and I walk out the door, making my way to the office. I walked through the streets of Brooklyn, keeping my head held high, making my way to the New York Bell Company Office, or that's what it was to the public.

I walked through the door, saw the woman at the phone booths, talking through their headsets, and making sure everything was working properly. I walked to the end of the first table and said to the woman on the last seat, "Hey Rose."

"Hey y/n. Didn't know you were coming in today," she says, continuing to press buttons.

"Neither did I. Apparently it's important," I say. She then presses the button that reveals a door leading to the secret office of the SSR.

"Good luck," she says, shooting me a smile. I need it. For all I know I could be fired. I walked through the desks where the other agents are at, working hard. At the very back to the right I already see Peggy, nose deep into a bunch of files.

"I thought you were off today with your lover boy," Peggy smirks, not looking up from her work. We are the perfect team when it comes to work. She follows the rules, strictly business, while I take chances, go off the rails and off the books. But we both make sure we get the job done.

"I got called in, important assignment. Do you know what's going on?" I ask, sitting down at my chair, which is at the desk next to hers.

"Nope, but I got the same message. Saying there is an advancement with the super soldier serum. They think they have the group of guys they want to ship out to training. Maybe it's about that," Peggy says, finally looking up from her files. "Do you have your work done?"

"When can your life ever not just be about work? I can't wait for the day a boy comes into your life and changes the way you think," I say, laughing lightly. I grab my files handing it to her for her to approve.

"All the guys look promising, but I don't think Erskine really thinks that they are the ones," I say, as she nods at my work.

"True. He says he's going to be looking tonight as well, see if any lucky guy wants to join the fun," she says.

I was about to add on to that when Dooley came out of his office door and said, "Carter, L/n." Peggy and I both look at each other, before getting up from our seats and following Dooley into his office.

Peggy and I sit down in the chairs across from him, and he stares at us like he's disappointed. Damn, I'm fired, but what did Peggy do? She wouldn't risk anything if it even had a 1% chance of getting her fired.

"As you two know, we are down on agents because they enlisted in the war. So, we are sending you two out there as well," he says, and I swallow hard. That is not what I expected.

"Since Carter has been more involved with Project Rebirth, we are sending you with Erskine to evaluate the candidates," he says, looking at Peggy, and then turns his attention to me. "L/n, you have been researching the Nazis organization Hydra, is that correct?"

"Yes sir," I say. One of my assignments has been trying to retrieve information about Hydra, since they could have been associated with some high tech equipment.

"Well, they are thinking about sending out troops to take down one of their bases. We want to send you out to London, being head of the military action out there," he says. On the outside I kept a calm face, but on the inside I'm feeling mixed emotions. Excited for getting this extraordinary chance, but nervous for going out there to war, where there's a good chance I won't come back. And don't get me started on what I'm thinking about Bucky and Steve.

"Thank you sir," I say, sending him a small smile.

"I'll be right on it," Peggy says. Chief Dooley hands us both separate files and dismissed us, and we made our way back to our desk. "Way to go," Peggy whispers to me, nudging my shoulder slightly.

"What about you? Getting to watch and train guys all day?" I say wiggling my eyebrows. "Maybe you'll find your one true love."

"Doubtful," Peggy says, reading her new file.

I open mine, knowing this is really important and something I need to focus on. It explains the base and what they know about it, and how they want to prepare for it. They have a list of everyone that is in the troops, as well as their ranks and specialities, but I decided to read that when I get to the grounds.

This isn't the first time I would be away from Steve and Bucky, but this would definitely be the longest. The longest I've been away from them was a month to try and find out if this club was selling drugs underground, which they were, but I told them that I was going on tour with Howard, since he was on tour.

I just don't know how I will be able to make up an excuse this time, or if I should just tell them.
