"All done, Agent," Violet says, putting the needle down on the tray. She hands me a glass of water and grabs a bucket of water and a rag.
I take the cloth out of my mouth, accepting the glass without hesitation. "Thank you Violet."
"It is my job," she says, as she starts to clean the blood off my leg. "You know, all the nurses talk about you."
"Oh gosh, all good things I hope," I say, taking another sip of water.
"Of course. It is amazing that a women is in charge of an entire infantry. It's truly inspiring what you do," she says, and I can't help but clench my jaw.
"Not sure about that. My first mission and it was a complete bust," I grumble, disappointed in myself.
She scoffs. "Don't be so hard on yourself. Word around camp was that that mission was almost impossible. No one would have been able to lead that to victory. It is a miracle that this many soldiers have been able to make it back alive."
"I know." She finishes cleaning off my leg and buts the bucket and rag away.
"You have two soldiers out there waiting for you," she says. "Do you want me to let them in?"
"Yes please. Also, is there anything to eat here?" I ask, feeling my stomach growl from the lack of food.
"I'll get you something, any requests?"
"I think I could eat anything right now, thank you." She nods her head as she walks out, and I chug the last of my water. I hold my hands over my eyes, trying to block the light that was giving me a pounding headache. I finally had time to think. Think about how I was not there to help Bucky. I sent all of these men into an impossible mission, when I knew it was a bad idea. I should have stood up to the Colonel. This is all my fault.
"Doll?"
I turn my head to find Bucky standing at the doorway. "Sergeant," I say and he smiles. He walks over, grabbing my hand and holding it up to his mouth to kiss.
"I would also like to see my cousin, if you don't mind," a voice says behind him. I look to see a tall, super soldier Steve with his normal smile. I guess it was not a hallucination.
"Hi Steve," I say, and gives him a smile. He walks over to the other side of me, kissing my cheek.
Bucky sighs and whispers under his breath, "Punk."
"Jerk," Steve responds, making me chuckle. "How are you feeling?"
"Better. Still hurts, but I'm good," I respond. "So, Captain America saves us all huh?" Steve blushes in embarrassment, looking down, being humble as always. "No one is going to challenge you in a back alley anymore."
"He finally gets to do what he loves. Fighting for what's right, and this time he won't come home with some cuts and bruises," Bucky smirks.
"I get to join my best friends in the fight of our lives. Looks like we can't be split up," Steve says, making us all smile.
"No one could split us up, even if we tried," Bucky says.
"When are you getting cleared?" Steve asks.
"Uh the last time this happened it took about two weeks until I could start training again, but I won't be fully cleared for probably a month," I say, which made both of their eyes wide and mouths drop.
"What?" they both say at the same time.
"This has happened before?" Bucky asks, almost yells. "I thought there were no more secrets between us."
"There isn't, I just forgot!" I say. "It was before we started dating, I got stabbed in the arm, no big deal."
"No big deal!" Bucky exclaims, totally blindsided by this information.
"Just two weeks?" Steve asks, trying to divert the conversation.
"There's no way that I'm allowing you to go back into the front lines in a month," Bucky says, always trying to protect me.
"Well you may be my fiancé but that's the Colonel's choice, not yours," I say, and Bucky slides down in his seat, making me giggle at his frustration.
"You're mine," I hear him mumble under his breath. "I should have a choice."
Our conversation was cut short when a woman peaks her head through the door. "Y/n, I heard what happened to you, are you alright? I was told to bring a sandwich to you," I hear the familiar English woman's voice. Peggy walks into the room, and stops when she sees Steve.
Steve immediately stands up, looking at Peggy in awe. I smile at them, seeing as something has sparked between the two people that I adore. "Hi," he says, suddenly out of breath.
"Hi," Peggy repeats, and clears her throat, ripping her eyes away from him and back to me. She hands me the sandwich, which I immediately take a bite into. "Umm, I came here to check up on Y/n. Heard you had a good stab wound."
"Well, it wouldn't be my first time," I say, remembering that one mission Peggy and I went on, the one I commented about earlier.
"Well, I'm glad you are alright," Peggy says, giving me a smile. "I'm sorry I can't stay longer to catch up. Colonel Phillips wants me to help him write letters to families that received condolence letters." She gives me a hug, promising to catch up later after I am rested. Once Peggy walks away, and Bucky and I look at Steve.
"What?" he says, acting all innocent.
"Don't act like you two didn't just have a moment," I say, making Steve blush.
"I have no idea what you are talking about," Steve scoffs.
"It's obvious. This whole place could feel the tension," Bucky says, and I nod in agreement. Steve doesn't even bother to debate us and tries to hide his smile.
Violet comes back in the room to check on me one more time. My leg was not rejecting the stitches, which was good, and that I was clear to go back to my tent and to stay in bed until I feel strong and rested enough to walk.
We all thank her and Bucky says, "how about we get you out of this place and back to your tent? I'll carry you."
"Alright," I say and sit up. We say good bye to Steve, as he gave us time to be alone, and Bucky carries me bridal style as we walk out of the medical tent. From over my shoulder, I hear the other soldiers, mostly Dum Dum cheering and whistle, making my cheeks glow red.
I was tired, for sure, and being in Bucky's warm grasp isn't helping. The exhaustion from the mission, the days spent in that cell bleeding out, and getting stitches unmedicated were finally catching up to me.
We got to the tent I'm staying at this base, and Bucky grabbed me some clothes to change in. He helped me, then got ready for bed himself. I was laying in bed, on the brink of falling asleep when I felt the bed dip.
Bucky joins me in bed, giving me a smile, and I reach my hand up to play with his hair. "Are you okay? After everything," I ask. He has never been through something like this before. It can really affect your mental state.
"I'm just glad you are alright. All I could think about was getting back to you," he says, which makes me feel butterflies in my stomach. No matter what situation we could be in, he would always know how to make me feel warm inside.
"I love you Bucky," I say, and I could see his eyes light up slightly, like he was hearing that for the first time.
"I love you, Doll. So much," he says, kissing my lips with love. He kisses my forehead and then pulls me into his arms, holding me close where we fell asleep peacefully for the first time in a while.
