Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare disorder in which your body's immune system attacks your nerves. Weakness and tingling in your extremities are usually the first symptoms.

These sensations can quickly spread, eventually paralyzing your whole body. In its most severe form Guillain-Barre syndrome is a medical emergency. Most people with the condition must be hospitalized to receive treatment.

The exact cause of Guillain-Barre syndrome is unknown. But two-thirds of patients report symptoms of an infection in the six weeks preceding. These include respiratory or a gastrointestinal infection or Zika virus.

There's no known cure for Guillain-Barre syndrome, but several treatments can ease symptoms and reduce the duration of the illness. Although most people recover from Guillain-Barre syndrome, the mortality rate is 4% to 7%. Between 60-80% of people are able to walk at six months. Patients may experience lingering effects from it, such as weakness, numbness or fatigue.

"Mommy! Mommy!" A small voice screamed from my left side.

I rubbed my eyes and threw the covers off, my hair messy and my face marked by the creases of the pillow I used during the night.

"Are you still sick, mommy?" Dylan asked as he hugged me with his small body. "I will kiss you mommy, so you will get better."

Pinugpog niya ako ng halik sa buong mukha kaya natawa na rin ako.

"Thank you Dylan. For sure mommy will feel better soon. I love you baby." I kissed the top of his head and hugged him.

Terrence coughed to get our attention. "Breakfast, anyone? I'll make pancakes for you guys. You want maple syrup or chocolate syrup, buddy?"

And with that, my son was automatically hypnotized. Nagkakasundo talaga ang dalawang to.

We left Dylan at my mother's house and we went to the hospital kahit wala naman kaming duty ngayon. Terrence insisted I get a full workup, a full set of labs and medical imaging to know what's going on in my body. I've been passing out a lot lately and I am not even severely anemic like before.

I am not pregnant too at sigurado ako dyan dahil hindi ako mabubuntis nang ganun ganun na lang. Add the fact that my left arm just loses its power every now and then.

Nakahiga lang ako sa CT bed habang inaayos ng technician ang velcro straps sa katawan ko. I just stared at the ceiling as the machine moved me further into the cylinder, wondering what the result will be.

Natatakot akong may makita silang mali sa akin o baka may sakit ako o tumor sa utak. Could it be multiple sclerosis? A tumor? Guillain-Barre Syndrome?

My heart raced as I thought of all the possibilities.

When the CT bed moved out of the cylinder, Terrence immediately came into view as he entered the room wearing scrubs. This is the only way he can enter the premises, ang magpanggap na nakaduty siya kahit hindi naman talaga. He removed the velcro straps from to release me from the bed and assisted me to stand up before fixing my hair.

"Ok ka lang?" He asked me and I just nodded kahit sa totoo lang ay masakit na ang ulo ko. "We'll just wait for Dr. Chan, ilang minuto lang andito na yun."

The radiographer processed the images in the computer as we stayed in the dark room with them saka tumigil sa pagscroll sa mouse at bumaling kay Terrence. Agad namang lumapit sa monitor si Terrence habang nagdadial sa telepono ang radiographer.
