Step 1, colloquially known as the boards, assesses whether you understand and can apply important concepts of the sciences basic to the practice of medicine, with special emphasis on principles and mechanisms underlying health, disease, and modes of therapy. Step 1 ensures mastery of not only the sciences that provide a foundation for the safe and competent practice of medicine in the present, but also the scientific principles required for maintenance of competence through lifelong learning. Step 1 is constructed according to an integrated content outline that organizes basic science material along two dimensions: system and process.

Step 1 is a one-day examination. It is divided into seven 60-minute blocks and administered in one 8-hour testing session. The number of questions per block on a given examination form may vary, but will not exceed 40. The total number of items on the overall examination form will not exceed 280.

"Bakit hindi mo pa istart ang processing? Step 1 lang naman."

"I don't wanna move to the USA. Besides, if I get licensed here in Norway, it's very easy to get a reciprocating license in other countries. I'd rather go to Canada kaysa sa USA no, kapangit ng health system nila." Sagot ko kay kuya.

"Sumama ka nalang kasi sa akin when I move to Michigan. I'm not saying na lilipat ka doon. Their health care system sucks as hell but training wise, magandang training ground for specialization ang mga tertiary hospitals nila doon. Just think about my offer."

If I didn't know any better, I would say na talagang sinasadya niyang paghiwalayin kami ni Terrence. Quiet na lang ako para walang gulo. I am old enough para panindigan ang decisions ko.

Come to think of it, may point si kuya. I can't simply pass up on the opportunity to train in the best hospitals in the United States along side the the best clinicians in the world. It's safe to say that the US is the gold standard when it comes to medical advances despite having flocks of people complaining about how their health care systems basically sends people to death.

"I'll think about it. May one year training pa naman ako so I still have time to process for registration if ever."

I took the folder from the table at isinukbit ang bag kong nakapatong lang sa mesa.

"Let's go?" Tanong ko kay kuya. We went out of the house and drove to the hospital which I chose for my training program. Unlike other countries, we here in the great Scandinavian nation of Norway have automatic licensing once we graduate from med school. I already had my student medical license before I started my clinical clerkship and I was already considered a "doctor" but still with limitations.

This is it!

I held my papers and went straight to the student registration office. She smiled at me sweetly and shook my hand.

"You'll be a licensed Doctor after a few days. Congratulations Dr. Kaneda."

My school doesn't only teach medicine. It also helps students process the requirements to get full registration and also present graduates a myriad of choices for specialization.
