Today, Piers Morgan just told the world how thankful he is for the existence of the NHS workers, especially the Filipino nurses who crossed the seas to serve a different nation. My heart swelled in joy.
Today, a colleague suffered from discrimination. Someone slipped a note under her flat's door, saying that she should be evicted because she is bringing the CoViD virus from the hospital.
On one hand, people are grateful to us. On the other hand, some people treat us like we are lepers. What hurts the most is that those same people might actually depend on us someday, God forbid na magkasakit sila. Meron diyang health care worker na sinabuyan ng bleach. May doktor na pinapalayas sa condominium kahit wala naman siyang offence and he has been a good tenant for years. May ambulance driver na binaril because people thought that he ferried CoViD patients. I have seen countless articles on the internet on the discrimination of frontliners, mostly health care workers. And this has to stop.
In the US, nurses and doctors are being fired for bringing their own personal protective equipment since the hospital isn't providing enough for them. They are being forced to use an n95 mask for one whole week, while in fact it is a single use mask. Some nurses are being forced to work in CoViD wards even if they themselves also have medical conditions that make it more detrimental if ever they contract the disease. People, medical staff have to the right to refuse an area of assignment if they think it is safe for them and people are bashing them for it saying "Nurse ka, dapat alam mo yan. Kasama sa trabaho mo yan umalis ka na lang sa propesyon mo kung ayaw mong mag-alaga ng may CoViD". Like what the fuck? First and foremost, nurses, doctors and every other medical professional did not sign up as sacrificial pigs to be slaughtered. Hindi rin sila bala ng kanyon, utang na loob. They are humans and they have the right to refuse kung alam nilang hindi nila kaya. Just because they are medically trained doesn't mean you can just put them in the line of fire without even giving them enough ammunition to protect themselves.
To those people, shame on you. SHAME ON YOU. Kayo na lang mag-alaga ng pasyente total magaling kayo.
My hospital's sister facility already ran out of protective gowns and the staff are already improvising using garbage bags... to think that this is the United Kingdom! I am lucky that my hospital has adequate supplies... but until when? The case toll rises by the hour and time will tell when our hospital system will be swamped by cases, much like Italy and Spain. If worse comes to worst, we might end up like them, having to choose who will live or die. I am lucky that I am still well protected and well provided for. I haven't experienced any form of discrimination... yet, and hopefully never.
To the people who are supporting US, thank you. Your thanks yous and claps are enough to keep us going. The only thing I am asking from you now, is to keep yourselves safe inside the comfort of your own homes to slow the spread of the disease. If it's not necessary, then please stay at home and read articles from credible sources so you can be more educated on the disease. Protect yourselves and your family by practicing proper hand hygiene and social distancing if there is ever a need to go out in crowds.
Stay safe and stay healthy. God bless!
We will get through this. This, too, shall pass.
