A pain scale is a tool that doctors use to help assess a person's pain. A person usually self-reports their pain using a specially designed scale, sometimes with the help of a doctor, parent, or guardian. Pain scales may be used during admission to a hospital, during a doctor visit, during physical activity, or after surgery.

Doctors use the pain scale to better understand certain aspects of a person's pain. Some of these aspects are pain duration, severity, and type.

Pain scales can also help doctors make an accurate diagnosis, create a treatment plan, and measure the effectiveness of treatment. Pain scales exist for people of all ages, from newborns to seniors, as well as people with impaired communication skills.

"How's the pain now?" I asked my patient while checking the dressings that I'm about to change.

"Just a little pinch. I think it's a 6/10 now, a barely there type of pain."

I laughed a little at what he said. I removed the dressings and observed the surgical site along with the drainage.

"There would be a little discomfort, ok? Just like what you said, a little pinch."

Lumingon ako sa nurse na kasama ko at sinenyasang lumapit siya.

"Jen, can you call the AP and get the clearance? This one can be removed now. It's healing well but there's no order to remove the staples yet. Did he come and see the patient this morning?"

"Last time he came was yesterday morning. You came here earlier than him today."

"Jen can you just call his phone and ask him if he can come here right now or give the VO for staple removal? Robert here is patching up nicely." I gave him a sweet smile and thumbs up. The old man just winked at me and gave me two thumbs up as well.

Jen was already on the phone when the man of the hour came through the door, still wearing a pair of scrubs under his white coat.

"Good morning there, young man. You look grumpy today." Robert laughingly said.

"Robert, you seem energetic today. How are you feeling?" He asked my patient.

"If you have this beautiful lady doctor checking on your as soon as you wake up then you will really have energy. Who would be grumpy this early in the morning, doctor?" He followed with a laugh.

"Dr. Kaneda, how's our gentleman here? Seems like he's really fond of you."

"Of course. Everybody loves me, Dr. Laine. Robert said I'm his honorary grand daughter, am I right, gramps?" I smiled at the old man and winked at him, earning a hearty laugh from my patient.

"Of course my dear. Now come here and remove grandpa's staples so gramps can go home and fix his tool shed." He motioned to have a high five with me but my hand is already gloved and I can't touch anything else, nakapatong lang sa dressing table ang kamay ko at tumatawa ako.

"Can't high five right now, Robert. Maybe after changing your dressings."

I heard Terrence chuckle behind me. "Alright you can go home tomorrow morning, Robert. Anri here will remove the staples and put new dressings. When your wife and your daughter come to the hospital for your discharge, the nurses will teach you how to clean your wound properly and your medications."
