Faye Silver sat by herself in the corner of the deserted Gamemakers room, her knees tucked up to her chest as she read a book. Another day in the arena had past, and Jasper Devan and Hanan Raoul were the two tributes to perish. Despite it being dark and deserted in the Gamemaker’s room, Faye was still in there. It was well past midnight and all the Gamemakers - including her sister and father - were asleep, but Faye had always been a night owl. She was curled up in the corner of the room in veiled silence, her features illuminated by the faint glow of a hologram, and she was focused on nothing but her novel. Her eyes lit up as she immersed herself in the fictional world, and she continued to flip over page after page, reading for hours upon hours.
“Oh, Faye, thank god you’re still here!”
Next thing Faye knew, someone was gripping her upper arm and dragging her out of her spot on her seat. She cried out in surprise and dropped her book on the floor, watching as she lost her progress and the novel flipped shut. Rage filled her body, and she turned around to see wide-eyed, panicked Juliette.
“You made me drop my book,” Faye grumbled. Juliette stared at her as if she had just sprouted a pair of cat ears.
“… So? Books are stupid. You’re making it sound like I just killed someone with your tone!” Juliette retorted. Faye wanted to smack her sister right there and then, but she restrained herself.
“It’s worse than killing someone.” Faye snapped. “Whatever you want, I’m not helping.” Faye didn’t want any part of Juliette’s idiotic antics, she just wanted to get back to reading. She turned around to try and leave, but Juliette’s grip tightened on her arm like a vice.
“Please?” Juliette widened her eyes imploringly as she begged her younger sister, her eyes wide. “You were always so much better with technology, and the President will literally kill me if he finds out!”
“Figuratively,” Faye corrected her sister curtly, her eyes narrowed into slits. Juliette frowned.
“What do you… nevermind. Please, just help me.”
Faye sighed. If she got involved in whatever shit Juliette had created this time around and it was as serious as she said, she risked tarnishing her ‘daddy’s little girl’ image that her father had delusionally created in his head. Without that positive relationship with her father it would be far more difficult for Faye to manipulate Antonio to get what she wanted. And she couldn’t have that. She relied on that constantly, only ever dropping her façade when she was by herself or just around Juliette, who had suspected from the beginning that she wasn’t the perfect little good girl, and rather a mastermind. Which, Faye thought smugly, she clearly was.
But then again, it would be fun to see what Juliette had gotten herself into this time. Faye already knew she was the superior sister, but it was always hilarious to see her sister get in trouble or do something wrong. And so, Faye agreed.
“Fine,” Faye grumbled. “But you owe me big-time. And if I get in trouble, I will rain hell upon you. Deal?”
Juliette looked slightly frightened, but she agreed in a heartbeat. “Deal. Come on.”
Faye rolled her eyes and traipsed after her sister, supressing the urge to yawn. She was tired, staying up late did have its downsides. Juliette reached the centre of the Gamemakers room and tapped a button, and a hologram of the arena popped up. And Faye immediately recognised the problem.
“Oh my god, Juliette, what the hell did you do?” Faye cried out, shoving her sister out of the way. Because, despite the map of the arena being laid out in front of her, the ruins had all disappeared. All that was left was a sandy, barren plain.
