I never expected to get this far, but I was here. I also never expected to wake up in a place that smelled of death. Literally. I remembered waking up here beside Tyber, Phae and Nixie. There was nothing special about the place, other than the river that streamed across the area, as well as the dead grass that was far from green. It seemed like an endless plain of nothingness until it reached the singular building. Tyber said it reminded him of the Underworld, and maybe that is what it really was. It did smell like death after all.
The three of us walked along the dead grass until we were met with the river. In the middle was a large boat, and as far as I could tell, there was someone in it.
“Is that a boat?” Phae spoke up with widened eyes, speaking in her fake voice that I had begun to grow used to.
“No Phea, it is a friggen mermaid. Yes, it’s a boat,” Tyber responded in a snark. What happened to those two? Last time I checked they were all lovey dovey with each other.
“A mermaid. Mermaids are amazing,” she gleamed stupidly. I rolled my eyes while Tyber sighed with an exasperated growl. Beside us Nixie remained quiet as though she was still taking her surroundings in.
“We should cross this, but I’m not exactly sure on how we are supposed to yet. That man in the boat could help us, though,” Nixie finally spoke up. I stared at the man in the boat.
“We should call him over somehow,” I responded to her, taking a step forward. I stripped my shoes off and shouted at the boat man.
“Could you help us across here?!” The man’s head snapped to look at the three of us. His boat began to move towards us.
We stood, waiting for the man in the boat to reach the edge of the river. After twenty minutes of waiting we ended up sitting on the grass. All of us eyes the boat that was slowly inching closer.
“This is boringggg,” Phae complained in a screech.
“We just have to wait for him. We won’t be able to get past the river if we don’t wait,” Tyber said to Phae with an annoyed look across his face. I ignored both of them as I continued to look out at the boat. As it grew closer you could begin to recognise the features of the man. He was seemingly tall and skinny, dressed in all black. A black coat of some sort for that matter and it covered his hair and most of his face.
“Well isn’t this guy a ray of sunshine,” Nixie spoke, and I laughed with a nod of my head.
“He really does. This whole place is giving me the creeps. Reminds me so much of death,” I said to the girl, staring at the dead grass before looking back up. Nixie nodded her head.
It wasn’t long after that, that the mysterious man in the boat had reached the shore. I stood, ready to greet the man. As did the others.
“Welcome to the Underworld. I am Charon and keeper of the Underworld gates. Do you three children have anything to get you this ride across the River Styx?” Charon questioned us.
“I have some lipstick,” Phae suggested. “Brought it just in case,” she gleamed, and I refrained myself from laughing out loud. I’m sure the man of death wanted bright red lipstick as payment for letting us cross the River Styx. Charon glared at Phae.
“What sort of payment are you looking for?” I asked him in questioning.
“Roman money,” was all he responded with in a deadpanned voice. I nodded my head, feeling my palms begin to break out in a nervous sweat. We didn’t have Roman money. That was when Phae spoke up once more.
“You should have told me this before. Look, Roman money,” Phae said gleaming with excitement, putting the Roman coin up in Charon’s face. I could tell by her very slight role to the eyes was a signifying act that she was really beginning to struggle to keep acting like a stupid blonde. Charon grabbed the coin and let us on-board and the only question running through my mind was, how did Phae get a Roman coin in the first place?

The three of us got off the boat at the entrance of the building and bid Charon good bye before he sailed off, and away from us. We stepped inside the building only to be met with a growling three headed dog. We all stepped backwards, fright scrawled across our faces. That was when Jonah and Jaiden came from behind us, not noticing the three headed dog, they continued to walk on, talking away. That was until the dogs grabbed and ripped at the flesh of the two. We all screamed, ready to make a run for it when I spotted a red ball off to the side.
I walked over towards it in a tiptoe, trying to hide my wheezing fear as sweat dripped off my forehead and as I tried to get the dead boys out of my mind. When I looked back over the dogs for a brief second I was met with Nixie walking forward, weapon armed. “Nixie, don’t” I screamed out, but I was too late, she was gone. The dogs head each had something to eat. All three people dead. I wiped away my rapidly growing tears and grabbed the hands of a non-fazed Phae and Tyber who was nearly as hysterical as me. And from there, we just ran and ran while they were still distracted, just trying not to picture the dead bodies being torn apart. Because this was the Hunger Games. Friends would die, it was guaranteed. That is why if this be you in the near future, I give you my only piece of advice; don’t make friends that are going to make you sad when they die. Keep your guards up and only use people when you need to get out of the games alive. It is the cruel and harsh way. The way where nobody should stand in your way. I hope you learn from my mistakes.
