The next day after school, Ashlyn headed to the girl's locker room for her first official track and field meeting. Becky wasn't upset at all that she didn't make it, in fact, she looked relieved. Once Ashlyn joined her other teammates, she was immediately swarmed with handshakes and smiles.
"Hi! I'm Fiona! I'm the team captain."
"Hello there! You can call me Carol."
"Yvonne"
"Tessa."
"I'm Jessica but people call me Jess."
The introduction went on and on as everyone introduced themselves. Everyone except for a certain redhead. Mindy was sitting at a corner, sulking.
"And that girl over there is Mindy." Fiona whispered to Ashlyn. "She may look like a bitch right now but she's okay once you get to know her.
"What's her problem anyway?" Ashlyn asked.
Fiona shrugged. "She's just pissed off that you beat her yesterday. If I were you, I'll watch my back when Mindy's around."
"Alright girls! Settle down!" Coach Jenna boomed once she entered the locker room. "I want to inform you that we got a new member today. Her name is Ashlyn." She smiled at Ashlyn and handed her a blue and white shirt. "This is your jersey."
Ashlyn unfold the shirt and admired her name that was printed at the back. "Thanks Coach."
Coach Jenna nodded. "I want all of you to get ready and I'll be waiting on the field. You've got five minutes!" She said before leaving.
Everyone scrambled to their assigned lockers and got changed into their jerseys. Ashlyn was the last one to leave as she had trouble finding her own locker. Little did she know that she wasn't alone.
A hand slammed right next to her locker, making Ashlyn startled. "What the hell!"
"Listen here newbie!" Mindy snarled. "Don't get too smug just because you beat me yesterday. I'm the best runner that Empire High has and always would be. Got that?"
Ashlyn's eyebrows raised. "Really? Because if I'm not wrong, Empire High's track and field team had never won anything for forty years. Don't you think this school needs a new best runner, Mindy?" She smirked and left the redhead who had her mouth wide open.
Coach Jenna had the girls do hurdles, sit ups and other intensive training. While Ashlyn was working her butt off, most of her teammates were just staring at the water polo boys at the right hand side where the pool was. Ashlyn rolled her eyes, finally figuring out why the team wasn't doing so well over the past forty years. They're weren't training. They were freaking drooling! Maybe they should put up a fence to separate the pool from the field. The only girls that were training seriously were Ashlyn, Fiona and Mindy. Mindy looked determined as she was jumping over the hurdles, probably training hard to ensure her spot as the 'best runner'. Ashlyn shook her head, remembering the talk they had in the locker room but her thoughts were interrupted when she felt someone staring at her. Glancing up, her eyes met Miranda's cold eyes. She was glaring at Ashlyn while twirling a baton with her hands. 'Why oh why must cheer practice be on the field too?' Ashlyn sighed.
Two hours later, Coach Jenna blew her whistle. "That's enough for today girls! See you next week and enjoy your weekend!"
The girls all squealed as they head back towards the locker room, murmuring about their plans and all the house parties going on.
