Jay had no idea what Gwen was thinking, going ahead with the wedding despite the apparent alien threat that would likely be among the guests.
"Wouldn't you still marry me if I..." Sam had began as the two of them got the kids ready, "actually never mind, I was already pregnant with a human baby when we got married, I don't wanna do it over with a parasitic alien baby."
"Why don't you stop thinking about it and make sure Lukie doesn't take his clothes off again." Jay sighed wearily.
"C'mon Lukie," Sam murmured, lifting up the toddler so she could look into his smiling face, "ya gotta wear clothes, it's a wedding! Auntie Gwen wants you to look nice!"
Lucas giggled, reaching out to grab Sam's nose with his stubby fingers. Sam pulled a funny face and Lucas giggled harder, imitating the face. Jay smiled contentedly as his hife and son continued making faces at each other and laughing.
"Alright, you two," he murmured, "finish getting ready or we'll be late!"

Jay was determined to keep the children as close to him as possible during the wedding. Sam had brought Zephyr, but Jay knew she would likely stay by Sam's side. He knew the children weren't the target of the alien disguised as a guest, but there was no way he was letting them get hurt accidentally. He had hoped Sam would be able to help, but, as to be expected, Jack needed her.
"Don't get hurt." He murmured as Sam walked towards their oldest son, grabbing her hand.
"I won't," Sam said, "don't worry about me. I met her husband last night."
Jay suddenly grabbed Sam by the ends of her untied bowtie and yanked her down so they were practically nose to nose.
"I'm serious, Sam," he said firmly, staring into her shocked face, "do. Not. Get. Hurt."
Sam blinked.
"Okay," she murmured, disgruntled, "I won't. I promise. Please let go."
Jay sighed, releasing her. Sam straightened herself.
"I love you." She murmured with a small smile.
"I love you too." Jay muttered, then turned to gather the children together so he wouldn't see her walk away. He didn't want to watch that. Didn't want to see Torchwood take her away from him and their children and into danger. Every time Sam went off to go on some mission a knot formed in Jay's stomach, and it just got tighter and tighter until she got home. And Sam never seemed to realize that. She acted like it was nothing, nothing at all to put her life on the line every day, get injured over and over again, and then keep going back to do it again the next day. Jay would never understand the appeal.

"If there are any persons here who object to the union of these two people before me-"
"STOP!"
The priest was cut off as Jack charged into the venue, hands in the air.
"Sorry, stop!" He said.
"Sam!" Jay exclaimed in a low voice, "what is he doing?" Sam raised her eyebrows, bouncing Lucas on her knee.
"Being our son, I'd say." She replied.
"Jack." Gwen murmured warningly.
"I can't let you do this," Jack said softly, "not today." That was when a woman in a black dress suddenly stood up and transformed into a horrendous beast. She was in the row next to Sam, Jay, and their children. Sam stood up, pulling a gun from the small of her back and leaping in front of her family.
"Back, foul creature!" She bellowed, but the beast took no notice of her, tossing her against the wall like a rag doll.
"SAM!" Jay cried.
"MAMA!" Hanna wailed at the same time. The creature leaped out one of the windows and Jack, Tosh, and Ianto gave chase, rushing out of the venue. Owen stayed behind, joining Jay and Zephyr as they hurried to Sam's side.
"Sam!" Jay gasped, "Sam, say something!"
Sam groaned weakly.
"Did we get the Nostrovite?" She croaked.
"DON'T YOU EVER DO THAT TO ME AGAIN!" Jay exclaimed, wrapping his arms tightly around her so tightly she couldn't breathe.
"I guess that's a no." Sam wheezed while Jay tried to stop the rivulets of tears flowing down his cheeks.
"Your ear's bleeding." Owen murmured. Sam chuckled softly.
"I knew these earrings were a mistake." She said, reaching up to touch her left ear, which was dripping blood from a cut where the creature's claws had nearly pulled the metal loop from her flesh.
"Does anything else hurt?" Owen asked, kneeling beside Jay.
"Just my... everything." Sam groaned, "I'm fine though. Gimme some o' them alien painkillers or something."
"Sam, you can't be serious!" Jay sniffed, "you can't go after that-"
Owen had already taken a white syringe with a nozzle-like end from his pocket and injected something into Sam's wrist. Sam sighed with a tiny shudder.
"You need more?" Owen asked.
"Nah," Sam murmured with a slight shake of her head, "now c'mon, let's go after the others."
"Sam-!" Jay pleaded. But once again Sam ignored him as she kneeled in front of Zephyr, cupping the big cat's face.
"Keep Jayjay and the kids safe," she murmured, kissing her nose, then stood and beckoned to Owen, "let's go." She said.
"SAM CYAN AURORA RYDER!" Jay shouted as his hife walked away from him, "YOU ARE OUT OF YOUR GODDAMN MIND!"
Sam didn't reply if she'd heard him, though Owen cast him a sympathetic glance over his shoulder that Jay didn't quite understand.
That left Jay standing there, fists clenched, and feeling so much anger inside he wanted to scream.

"I can't believe you'd just walk away like that!" Jay fumed after the ceremony. Sam had been staring that the dancing couples on the dance floor with stars in her eyes but Jay didn't care, he was furious. Sam looked up when he spoke to her, surprised.
"Jay, this is my job." She murmured.
"I don't care!" Jay snapped, "this is way different! The children were here, I was here!"
"All the more reason for me to do what I'm supposed to and protect you!"
"Just shut up, Sam! I don't wanna hear it, you could have died today!"
"You're cute when you're angry."
"LISTEN TO ME, SAM, I AM SERIOUS!"
"Okay, okay," Sam said softly, standing up to lay her hands on his shoulders, "shhh, just calm down. I'm sorry, honey. I understand that you're angry and scared. And I'm sorry. But... this is how Torchwood is. If I could, I would change it for you. But I can't control aliens or the Rift they come through."
Jay sniffed.
"It's not fair." He whimpered.
"I know it's not." Sam murmured, blinking sadly.
"Will it ever be different?" Jay asked.
Sam took a deep, pensive breath, staring off into space with a faraway look in her eyes.
"Don't tell anyone I said this," she said quietly, "but I would say yes. Someday... somehow... it's gonna be different. Better."
"But you don't really believe it."
"I don't want to because it's improbable. But when I look at you... I can't help hoping what I see in my visions will come true. I see the future in your eyes, and it's beautiful."
