There had been a weird feeling nagging at Gwen ever since her wedding day. At first, she'd thought it was just jitters about her and Rhys being a newlywed couple, but after a few days it became apparent it was more than that.
Gwen wasn't nervous. She was... sad? But she wasn't sure why, she had no reason to be sad. She had just gotten married, for crying out loud! But it was almost like something was wrong. Missing. And she didn't know what it was.
Owen was giving Gwen a checkup to make sure carrying the alien egg and having it vaporized inside her hadn't damaged her organs when Gwen, seized by a surge of melancholy, burst into tears. The others overheard her crying and rushed over to the rails of the autopsy bay, Sam practically leaping down the stairs.
"Owen, what did you say to her?" She demanded.
"Nothing!" Owen protested, "what makes you think it's something to do with me?"
"It's not Owen," Gwen sniffled before Sam could start an argument and point out how insensitive Owen could be (which might have been true, but Sam herself could be ignorant sometimes as well), "it's... I don't know what it is. Ever since the wedding I've just felt... so down."
"Maybe you're just getting used to married life?" Tosh supplied comfortingly.
"I thought so too," Gwen murmured, wiping tears from her face, "but it's been almost a week, I don't know why I still feel this way."
"I do," Sam spoke up, and Gwen looked at her hopefully, "you've got the Baby Blues."
"What?" Gwen demanded.
"I don't think that's possible." Jack murmured.
"Sam, don't be stupid," Owen said, "Gwen wasn't even really pregnant, she was carrying a parasitic alien egg-"
"That had a developing baby inside of it," Sam cut in, "listen, I dunno much about Nostrovites but I do know that having another living thing developing inside of you changes you. I've had three children, and after each one I did go through a... short period of time when I was just sad. Tired. Irritable."
"Really? We hadn't noticed." Ianto muttered sarcastically, and Sam gave him the finger without looking at him.
"I think what you're feeling now, Gwen, is the aftermath of having something feed off your life force - an alien baby would probably take a bit more out of you than a human baby, especially one that develops as fast as a Nostrovite."
"So you think that's why I feel this way?" Gwen asked.
"Probably," Sam murmured, sitting next to her on the examination table, "I don't care what Owen says, I know what having another human being stuffed inside of you feels like, and I'm imagining an alien egg feels a bajillion times worse."
"I'm right here," Owen muttered, "Gwen, it's okay. We're here to take care of you, love. Just tell us when you need help and we'll help you."
Gwen nodded, leaning on Sam's muscular shoulder.
"Thank you." She said quietly.
