It had come up soon after the triplets were born. Actually it was the very night they arrived, Jack and Ianto had come home from visiting Jack's family at the hospital and Ianto had stayed up almost all night, staring at the ceiling.
"Jack," he murmured, nudging his sleeping husband to wake him, "Jack, wake up."
"I'm not cheating on you," Jack mumbled, still half asleep, "Stegman aren't that sexy..."
"Jack," Ianto insisted, taking a deep breath, "I want a baby."
There was a moment of silence before Jack sat bolt upright in bed.
"What?!" He demanded.
"I wanna have a baby." Ianto said
"With me?"
"Obviously with you, idiot! Who else would I have it with? I know you've always wanted a little Jack, or... Jacqueline," Ianto suppressed the urge to roll his eyes as he said it, "but you said you'd be willing to wait until I'm ready. Well, I'm ready."
"What brought this on?" Jack murmured, gently lying back down and snuggling closer to him.
"I dunno. Just watching your parents with the triplets after they'd just been born. Seeing them welcome those beautiful little faces to the world. I... realized I want that."
Ianto glanced over at Jack.
"Do you still want that?"
"Of course," Jack replied, "and there's no one I'd rather raise a child with than you."
He pressed a soft kiss to Ianto's lips, then started to laugh.
"Wow!" He exclaimed giddily, "this is actually happening, right? I'm not dreaming?"
"You're definitely not," Ianto replied, beaming, "and if you are, try not to wake up." He tapped Jack's nose affectionately and Jack cuddled even closer to him so their faces were barely a centimetre apart.
"It doesn't have to be Jacqueline." Jack murmured after a long silence.
"Huh?" Ianto asked quietly.
"The baby," Jack said, "if it's a girl, we don't have to name her Jacqueline. I remember the time you said you like the name Gabrielle. Gabby."
"I do like that name," Ianto agreed, "but we're calling her Gabz."
"Wha- oh, suddenly you get to decide the nicknames??" Jack demanded mock-angrily, and Ianto burst out laughing.
"You had your turn when you decided to call me 'honey' every five seconds on the Serenity mission!" He argued playfully.
"And I never heard you complain!" Jack objected. Ianto just laughed harder at that and Jack grinned at him, heart quickening as he thought about finally becoming a father alongside the man he loved more than anyone in the universe.[SEVERAL MONTHS LATER]
Even at Torchwood, Mondays could be incredibly slow. Today was one of those Mondays.
Jack was sitting his office chair, which he'd brought down from his office on the second floor, and was spinning around in it with an aimless expression, making random noises.
"Jack," Owen sighed from across the hub, "that is unbelievably annoying. Stop it."
"Your face is unbelievably annoying." Sam muttered in response, folding a drawing of Myfanwy she'd given up on into a paper airplane.
"That's why Anwen cried when he tried to play with her last week." Gwen added with a giggle.
"Oh, leave him alone!" Tosh cut in furiously, "ignore them, Owen, they're winding you up."
"Well we gotta do something for entertainment." Sam said, then she groaned, leaning back in her chair and tossing the paper airplane, not even watching as it glided across the hub and landed next to the coffee machine. "If we don't we'll die of boredom."
Tosh was about to tell her to grow up and stop complaining, but Ianto's phone ringing cut her off.
"Hello?" Ianto murmured, picking up, "yes, this is he... Really? Hold on."
Before anyone could ask what was happening or why Ianto suddenly looked so stiff with nerves, Ianto grabbed Jack's hand and dragged him up the stairs to his office. The door shut and there was a click afterwards to signify it had been locked.
"What the bloody hell was that?" Owen demanded.
"I dunno," Gwen responded, "I've never seen Ianto look like that before."
"I have," Sam spoke up, "it's the same face he had when he found out I accidentally destroyed the old interrogation table that he hated when I tried out the sonic boxing gloves."
"Was that really an accident though?" Gwen asked skeptically.
"Hey, Tosh asked me to try them out and I did because I wanted to help her!" Sam objected, "she should've known there would be collateral damage, it's the price of letting me go near alien weapons!"
"Oi, leave Tosh out of this." Owen said.
"Thank you." Tosh murmured to him. She paused. "It's pretty quiet up there." She noted, glancing at Jack's office. Everyone followed her gaze.
"You think everything's alright?" Sam asked with a hint of worry in her voice.
"They're probably just shagging," Owen scoffed, "Gwen, have you got any good innuendos for when they come back out, love?"
"They wouldn't have sex over a phone call." Sam said as Gwen threw her head back and laughed loudly.
"They'd have sex over anything, Sam," Owen replied, "have you even met them?"
Sam gave him the finger without even looking at him, still watching her son's office door intently.
"Sam, I'm sure they're fine," Tosh assured her, "they'll come out any minute now and tell us what's going on."
The words had barely left her mouth before Jack practically exploded out of his office door, leaped down the stairs by taking about three at a time, and began racing around the room at top speed.
"I'M GONNA BE A DAD! I'M GONNA BE A DAD!!" He shouted loudly and repeatedly as he did so.
"What the-?" Owen began as Gwen and Tosh got up to try and stop Jack, bouncing with excitement. Sam leaned back in her chair again, grinning from ear to ear and pressing her palms against her temples as if her brain was about to explode and rambling away ecstatically in Spanish under her breath.
Jack didn't stop running and shouting until Ianto joined them at the bottom of the stairs, looking like he'd been crying of happiness only a moment ago.
"You mean WE'RE gonna be dads." He corrected, trying to sound stern but unable to keep his voice from trembling with joy. Sam could see his hands were shaking too as Jack bolted up to him and swept him off his feet, spinning him around in an enormous hug. Gwen and Tosh began half-laughing half-sobbing, gripping each other's hands tightly.
"By the Spirits, this is fucking amazing!" Sam exclaimed, jumping out of her chair.
"Did I fucking miss something??" Owen demanded loudly. But no one answered him.Nine months later, she arrived. Perfect golden brown skin, a single strand of curly chocolate-colored hair, and deep umber eyes to match. Gabrielle Lisa Rose Harkness-Jones was perfect in every way.
Ianto started crying as soon as he saw her, covering his mouth as the nurse handed her to Jack.
"Oh, Jack," he choked out, "look at her. She's beautiful."
"She is," Jack agreed, silent tears rolling down his face as Gabrielle wrapped her tiny hand around one of his fingers, "hi Gabby." He murmured to her.
There was a faint click as the door to the waiting room opened and Sam, Gwen, Owen, and Tosh all filed in.
"There she is!" Sam exclaimed quietly, beaming, "look at that! That's my granddaughter, guys!"
Gwen started to cry as well, wrapping her arms around Ianto's neck as he buried his face in her hair.
"Congratulations, mate." Owen said, patting Ianto's shoulder as Tosh fanned herself with her hand, trying to blink away tears.
Then Sam was suddenly beside Jack, still grinning as she looked into his eyes.
"Hey Jacksie," she murmured, gripping his shoulder, "I... I'm so proud of you." Her smile softened as she leaned in to kiss his forehead, then looked down at Gabby as the she let out a tiny cry.
Jack let out a shaky breath and Sam steadied him as he swayed slightly.
"You gonna be okay, son?" She asked.
"Yeah," Jack croaked, letting the tears fall freely now, "how could I not be? This is everything I've ever wanted."
Sam's hand rested on his cheek, and Jack looked up at her radiant smile.
"And it's all I've ever wanted for you, my beautiful boy." She murmured.
