The sky was dark but the flowers in the garden gave off soft light as Sam walked through them, aimlessly, as though searching for something she'd never find. She remembered a night like this. When she was very little. About eight, if she remembered correctly.
Sam was crying. Huddled under a blanket in the garden after another viscous scolding from her Granny and Grampy.
They'd called her a word she didn't like; broken. Why was she broken? What had she done wrong? A pair of tiny hands suddenly pulled the blanket away.
"LEAVE ME ALONE!" Sam exclaimed.
"Sammy, it's okay, it's just me." Jay murmured, and Sam looked up into his smiling face, lit up by the flowers around them.
"Jay..." Sam sniffed as he cuddled next to her.
"Why are you alone in the garden at night?" He asked.
"Because I want to be." Sam muttered, hugging her knees to her chest and staring grumpily at her bare feet.
"But won't your parents worry about you?" Jay asked. Sam pouted, still not looking at him.
"Why are you crying?" Jay pressed.
"Just go away!" Sam growled, turning her back on him.
"But why?" Jay persisted.
"BECAUSE I'M BROKEN!" Sam yelled, fresh tears streaming down her face. She didn't even know what it meant for a human to be broken, but Granny and Grampy said she was, and they would know... wouldn't they?
Staring at the spot where this had happened ten years ago, Sam clenched her fists. Remembering.
Jay put his hand on her shoulder.
"But... just because you're broken doesn't mean you can't be fixed. Right?" He murmured. Sam didn't answer. "I don't think you're broken," he added, "I think you're perfect. And even if you are broken, I can fix you."
"You can?" Sam asked, echoing her younger self even though no one was around to answer her.
"I will," Jay responded, pressing a tiny kiss to her cheek, "nothing really bad can happen to either of us if we always have each other. Right?"
"Right." Sam said. She lifted her arm so Jay could get under the blanket with her. They sat with their backs against the water fountain, staring up at the stars.
"I'm always gonna be your friend, Sam." Jay said after a moment.
"Me too." Sam murmured in response.
And now Sam was crying a waterfall of tears because it had all been a lie. Jay wasn't her friend anymore, and he never would be again.
Sam remembered that night now, standing on her roof overlooking the garden. That was the night she'd seen Jay again for the first time since they'd parted ways, and she'd known from that moment that she loved him and she needed him desperately. But that was over now. She felt a hand on her shoulder and turned her head to see Jay beside her.
"What are you thinking about, my love?" He asked. Sam smiled at him.
"Nothing, darling," she replied, "just how happy I am that I found you again."
