When the strange creature Gwen had spotted in the hospital attacked the security guard and blood sprayed everywhere, all of the instincts Gwen had learned as a PC drained from her body. She staggered backwards, unable to take her eyes off the splatters of blood on the walls and the viscous teeth of the strangely human-looking animal mutilating the guard.
In her haste, Gwen stepped on her own heel and tripped, falling to the floor and too stunned to get back up.
The creature dropped the security guard, like a dog finally letting go of a shredded newspaper, and stared at Gwen. Its eyes were cold and hungry and blood and bits of flesh dripped from its gaping maw.
Gwen wanted to get up and run. She wanted to look away from all the gore and maybe pretend it had all been a dream. But she couldn't. She was frozen with fear.
The creature hesitantly shuffled towards her, looking almost curious. At that moment Gwen knew she was going to die and running wouldn't help her now, so she squeezed her eyes shut and waited for whatever would happen to her in the afterlife.
But it never came.
Suddenly there was a shout from behind Gwen and her eyes flew open just as an impressively tall person with dark tan skin covered in freckles, rippling golden and red hair, and a multitude of scars and tattoos leaped over her, swinging their muscular arm backwards and dealing a powerful punch to the creature's face. The beast staggered, caught off guard, and the newcomer - who still had their back to Gwen - tackled it to the floor, hitting it with a second blow that knocked it unconscious and placing one foot on its back.
Gwen noticed they were wearing dirty white sneakers with rainbow stripes and pink, yellow, and blue shoelaces.
"You don't have to do that every time." A familiar voice said behind Gwen, and she whipped her head around to see the man in the army coat - Captain Jack Harkness - striding up behind her, looking annoyed.
"I know," the other person laughed, straightening up and folding their arms (God, they weren't even trying to hide the fact that they had biceps like tree trunks) across their chest, "it's fun though."
Their accent was peculiar - not quite American like Jack's, but with the faintest trace of something else. Spanish? A South American country perhaps?
They turned their gaze on Gwen, and she bit her tongue to stop herself from gasping. Gwen had never seen eyes like this person's before.
They were a rich, vibrant green, like emeralds or sunlight through dense forest leaves, and they seemed to shine with an ethereal light.
Jack's colleague (as Gwen assumed they were) smirked at Gwen, stretching the small scar on their left eyebrow.
"And who might you be?" They asked, stepping towards her. They had to be at least six feet tall. They were certainly taller than Jack by a couple inches.
Jesus Christ.
"PC Cooper." Gwen managed to choke out.
"Okay," Jack's colleague scoffed, rolling those brilliant green eyes, "pompous much. What's your first name?"
"Gwen."
"Aww. A short name for a short girl!"
"SAM." Jack sighed pointedly.
"What? C'mon, is she even five feet tall?" His colleague - Sam - asked snidely. They extended their hand to Gwen, and Gwen noticed the dark green seahorse tattoo on their wrist and the snakebite scar on the back of their hand. "Lemme help you up. Wouldn't want you to fall again and dirty up that pretty face."
Gwen wanted to snap back, but she found herself unable to as Sam roughly pulled her to her feet.
"So your name's Gwen?" Sam asked, "anyone ever call ya 'Gwennie'?"
Gwen finally found it within herself to smirk back.
"Not twice." She said.
