Tosh hated to cry in public but she couldn't hold back her tears. Tommy was gone, and he'd be sent back to the frontlines in his time and then executed for cowardice. It broke Tosh's heart that this was the only way the world could be saved. Owen had said all of this was still here because of her.
But was it really worth it? Was this job really worth it?
"Tosh!" Owen exclaimed, and Tosh heard his footsteps running up behind her.
He'd followed her.
"Oh, Tosh, please don't cry," he stammered awkwardly when she turned to face him with tears streaming down her cheeks, "erm, it's okay, I'm here."
Tosh didn't say anything, just threw herself into his arms and began to sob. She felt Owen's body go rigid for half a second, then he seemed to relax, gently folding her arms around her in a comforting embrace.
"It's okay, Tosh," he repeated more gently, stroking her hair, "I'm not gonna leave you, okay? Do you wanna spend the night at my place? Y'know, so you're not all alone?"
Tosh was about to say that Sam had already invited her to sleep at her place, but Owen's mobile rang in his pocket before she could. She heard Owen mutter a tiny 'fuck' before answering.
"Hello?" He grumbled, still holding Tosh close. There was a pause. "You're serious?" He demanded, an edge of worry to his voice, "she's not due for... okay, okay, calm down mate. We'll meet up with you at the hospital."
"Hospital?" Tosh echoed, alarmed. She wiped tears from her face as Owen hung up.
"That was Ianto," Owen said, "Sam's gone into labor."The others could tell Tosh had been crying when she and Owen arrived at the hospital waiting room. Or at least that's what Tosh guessed from the way Gwen quickly rushed to hug her.
"Are you okay, love?" She asked anxiously.
"I-I'm fine," Tosh half-lied, "how's Sam doing?"
"I don't know," Gwen admitted, glancing at Jack and Ianto, who were locked in a serious looking conversation, "Jay's in the delivery room with her, and Jack's pretty worried. I don't think there's a doctor in right now."
"Of course there is," Owen spoke up, "I'm here."
"They're not just gonna let you walk in." Gwen protested.
"Well Sam is in labor, they need a doctor for the delivery, I'm a doctor, what else do they need?" Owen snapped.
He didn't give her a chance to answer, just brushed past her and briskly made his way down the hall.
"He is unbelievable." Gwen hissed furiously.
"Yeah..." Tosh murmured, watching him go. Gwen glanced at her.
"Don't tell me you find that attractive," she giggled teasingly, "we all love Owen but you have to admit he's a pain in the arse sometimes."
"He's my pain in the arse." Tosh objected a little more quickly than she'd meant to, then covered her mouth as she felt her face get hot.
Gwen laughed softly, but Tosh didn't really care if she teased her. She was suddenly remembering the weird hallucination she'd had earlier that day at St Teilo's hospital, where she'd seen herself and Owen with two children - a boy of about four and a newborn baby girl.
Was that all just an illusion caused by residual Rift Energy or was it simply a sort of fever dream born from her sorrow and longing? Or was it something else?
Tosh wasn't sure she believed in visions of the future, but if it were possible, then was that what she'd seen? Her future? Her and Owen's future?
Whatever the case, it had certainly left Tosh with a strange, warm, tingly feeling that she couldn't explain. She wondered if the others had seen anything like that as well.
Meanwhile, Sam's eyes widened when Owen walked into the room in a scrub suit.
"Owen?" She panted, "what the hell are you doing??"
"Delivering your baby." Owen replied, as if it were obvious.
"Well I'm touched but shouldn't somebody on staff at the actual hospital be doing that?" Sam demanded. Her words were immediately followed by a grunt of intense pain as another contraction seized her body.
"There's no other doctors available at the moment," Owen said, "and that baby is coming fast."
"Yeah, no shit Sherlock," Sam hissed, "I hadn't noticed."
"Darling, please try to stay calm," Jay murmured soothingly, dabbing at her sweat-drenched forehead and cheeks with a cold cloth, "he's just trying to help." He looked at Owen. "You have delivered a baby before I assume?" He asked, this time with an edge to his voice that clearly said 'fuck this up and I'll rip to you shreds'.
"Once," Owen muttered, "err, well, I watched it. Then all I remember is the tiled floor rushing up to my face."
"Oh Jesus Christ, don't tell me you fainted." Sam growled, eyes squeezed shut and jaws and fists clenched against the pain.
"Well I'm your only option right now, Sam," Owen said seriously, "do you want your baby to be born or not?"
Sam opened her eyes and glared at him for a second, chest heaving.
"Get your ass over here!" She snarled, feeling yet another contraction building.
Owen was by her side before she'd even finished the sentence.
