Sam was in the kitchen making toast when she heard the voice.
"Estralita..."
Sam froze, dropping the knife she'd been spreading peanut butter on the bread with to the floor.
"No," she whispered, not daring to turn around, "no, it can't be."
"But it is. Turn around. Look at me, little one."
Sam closed her eyes and took a deep breath, slowly turning around. When she dared to open her eyes, he was there. Her Abuelo. Looking the same as when he had died fifteen years ago.
"Abuelo," Sam choked out, "why are you here?"
"Because I have something to tell you," her Abuelo murmured, "there is something you must do; open the Rift. It's the only way."
"The only way to what?" Sam demanded.
"To save the world," her Abuelo said, "I know you always wanted to do that, to be a hero. This is your chance."
"What are you...? Stop." Sam whimpered, wrapping her arms around herself.
"You wouldn't disobey me, Estralita."
"Abuelo would never say that to me. He would never ask me to betray Jack, my own son, and potentially endanger the whole world, if not the whole universe! Who are you, what do you want from me?"
"Sam?"
Sam glanced down the hall at Jay's voice, and when she looked back, her Abuelo - or whoever it had been - was gone. Sam sighed deeply, swallowing hard against the lump in her throat and blinking away tears.
"Sam?" Jay repeated, "are you okay, darling?"
"Y-yeah," Sam stuttered, hoping she sounded more confident than she felt, "I'm fine. Just thought I saw something... strange."
