The streets of Cardiff were mainly deserted when Sam, Jack, Ianto, and Owen were finally released from their temporary cell at the police station. Word of the supposed 'murder' had probably spread fast and caused most people to rush back to the safety of their homes.
"Well, at least the Sahen aren't feeding off the Rift and destroying the world." Sam murmured lamely.
"You made a good decision in telling them to leave, Sam." Ianto spoke up.
"I know," Sam said, "I definitely don't feel inadequate or self conscious over one of my first times actually dealing with an alien race that doesn't come in peace."
"There's no need for you to feel bad," Jack said worriedly, "you did great! Even if the Sahen didn't listen to you, at least they did leave when we showed them that Torchwood doesn't let anyone jeopardize the safety of our planet."
Sam smiled at him, green eyes sparkling sadly.
"Thanks, Jacksie," she murmured, "I guess it just... feels like a hollow victory. Y'know, since we got arrested instead of being able to celebrate. When I was growing up, my family would celebrate the smallest achievements. Well, when my dad's parents weren't there to remind them about how I'm a mistake and a failure and I always will be."
"Sam, you are not a mistake or a failure," Owen said fiercely, surprising Sam by gripping her shoulders and staring intently into her face, "you did your job and saved the world, even if there are parts of it that don't deserve saving."
Sam beamed.
"Thanks, Owen." She murmured tearfully.
"Don't you ever tell anyone else I said that to you," Owen added, "Gwen and Tosh will never let me forget it if they think I've gone soft."
"Okay." Sam chuckled, wiping her eyes on the back of her sleeve as Ianto placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"So... what do we do now?" He asked after a moment.
"Road trip?" Jack suggested with a gleam in his eye.
"Ooh!" Sam exclaimed, suddenly perking up, "let's head out to the countryside! I'm sick of the city."
"You're always sick of the city," Owen pointed out, "whereas I on the other hand would prefer it if I never had to leave again."
"I agree with Jack," Ianto said.
"Of course you bloody do," Owen muttered, rolling his eyes, "isn't tonight supposed to be for me?"
"Nah, it's for all of us," Sam said with a laugh, "c'mon man, open fields are the place to be."
"'C'mon man, open fields are the place to be'!" Owen echoed, trying his best to impersonate her and causing Jack to burst out laughing.
"I don't sound like that!" Sam protested as the four of them started the walk back to the Torchwood SUV, which was still parked outside the bar a few blocks away. "... Do I?"

Strangely enough, Owen was actually finding the countryside oddly soothing at this time of night. There were glowworms twinkling in the bushes and tall grass, and when Jack pulled the SUV to a stop on the side of a dirt road, the sounds of crickets chirping loudly immediately replaced the sound of the engine.
"Look at those stars..." Sam breathed as the four of them stepped out of the vehicle, gazing up at the sky.
"Okay Sam, we all know how horny you are for nature." Owen muttered.
"Oh c'mon, Owen," Sam said as Jack and Ianto giggled to each other, "you gotta admit this is fucking awesome."
Owen wasn't about to do that at all, even if he did to himself, though either way a convenient distraction presented itself right at that exact moment.
"What's that?" He asked, pointing to a strange light in the distance.
Sam turned.
"City lights?" She tried.
"No, Cardiff's the other way," Ianto objected, "and that's way too close and flashing way too much to be city lights."
"You're right, Ianto," Jack murmured, walking closer to the light without waiting for the others, "and I don't think a light in that particular color would be of Earth origins."
"Oh, great," Sam huffed, "more aliens. Just what I was hoping for."
The four of them cautiously crested the small hill blocking their view of the lights, the crickets falling silent around them as they moved through the grass. At the top of the embankment, they stopped, and Sam immediately dropped into a crouch.
Jack followed suit, and then Ianto. Owen rolled his eyes and stayed standing until Sam wordlessly grabbed him by the sleeve and pulled him down beside her.
"Is that the Sahen?" Ianto asked Jack apprehensively.
"No," Jack whispered back, gazing at the massive, round, flat alien ship in front of them from which the light came, "that's not what Sahen ships look like."
"Then who's in there?" Sam pressed, brow furrowing with confusion and anxiety, "why would two separate species visit Earth in the same night?"
Before Jack could answer, a door opened in the side of the ship and three creatures stepped out into the grass.
They were all between six and seven feet tall, with three long, spindly legs and eight tentacles instead of arms. Their skin was white and marked with orange-brown stripes, and radiant scarlet hair cascaded down their shoulders, so long it reached their lower backs. They had thin, pinched faces with disproportionately large eyes and mouths, no visible noses, and two long antennae of sorts with glowing blue-green orbs on the ends - like those of deep sea anglerfish - protruding from their brows, which matched the bioluminescent markings on their flat chests.
"Oh," Jack breathed, "they're Lietea, sworn enemies of the Sahen. Some legends say they've been at war with each other for millennia."
"They're... beautiful." Ianto murmured, then stiffened. "I mean, in a weird way. I'm not strange for saying that, am I?"
"Nah, you're good pal," Sam shrugged, "they totally look fuckable to me."
"Oh they are," Jack chuckled, "believe me. And they're very open to the concept of orgies."
"You three are disgusting." Owen muttered.
"Oh yeah, right. As if you've never considered having sex with an alien species." Sam scoffed.
"If I had I wouldn't tell you about it." Owen shot back.
"Jack, what're they doing?" Ianto cut in, leaning closer to Jack in the tall grass.
"Looking for something, I suppose," Jack murmured, "maybe the Sahen?"
"Yeah, but they're gone," Sam said, "do you think we should... maybe tell them that?"
"Those are Lietea warriors, I wouldn't walk right up to them out of nowhere. They're trained to kill on sight if necessary."
"Those are warriors? So they're sexy and deadly?"
"Did you miss the part where I said they're trained to kill on sight?"
"I'd come back and thank them for that, honestly."
"Sam, for fuck's sake," Ianto spoke up, "can you be a little less pansexual for five seconds?"
"Nope." Sam said with a sly grin.
"I swear, these glowworms are so fucking stupid..." Owen muttered, not paying attention to the others at all and staring at the bluish green light coming from between his fingers.
"Uhh... Owen, that's not a glowworm." Jack said slowly, eyes wide.
Owen frowned, but before he could ask Jack what the hell he was on about, the creature he'd assumed was a bug wriggled violently in his palm.
"UNHAND ME, GHIVOK!" It shouted, the light it gave off flashing more rapidly than before.
Owen let out a rather undignified shriek that he would later deny, dropping whatever was in his hand.
Instead of a bug, a much tinier version of the three Lietea warriors they'd seen before fell to the ground. This one had grey skin with silvery spots, and was only about three inches tall.
Once it found its footing it glared reproachfully up at Owen, muttering a string of what was presumably curses and insults in an alien language as it dusted itself off with its tentacles.
Sam gasped loudly.
"IT'S SO CUTE!" She exclaimed, leaning in closer to the tiny creature.
"Get back, you beast!" It hissed at her, curling its tentacles into fists and swinging at her face, "I'll get my Vrikied over here and she'll end your worthless life!"
"Vrikied?" Ianto echoed to Jack.
"It basically means husband or wife in Ot'ik, the Lietea's language." Jack explained, and Ianto nodded thoughtfully.
"You are totally not threatening at all, buddy," Sam said, gently picking the Lietea up again, "you're probably one of the cutest alien species I've ever seen."
"PUT ME DOWN!" The Lietea said furiously, ignoring her.
"Hey, hey, hey, easy," Sam murmured, "we're not gonna hurt you, little guy, I swear. I'm Sam, and I'm an interplanetary ambassador. What's your name?"
"Faltoth Bahmear Sar Biga Anqi Tholkeax."
"... Okay, I'm gonna call you Fal."
"Part of that is his spouse's name," Jack pointed out, "'Sar' means 'spouse of' or 'belonging to'."
"You know our language?"
"Some of it. Enough to know what you called Owen's mother a second ago."
"Well, it was probably true," Owen muttered, "so... thanks?"
"I don't have time for idle conversation!" Fal hissed, jumping off of Sam's palm and grabbing onto a grass stem, "I'm supposed to be looking for the Sahen. Those Phosnan are here to steal Rift energy to power their weapons and if we don't stop them they could obliterate us!"
"Weapons?" Sam echoed, eyes vacant with horror.
"See? I told you you were right to tell 'em to bugger off, you daft sod." Owen said.
"The Sahen are gone," Jack spoke up, "you can call back your troops. We probably haven't seen the last of them, but for now they've left. Thanks to my Ren."
He cast a loving glance at Sam, who smiled in return and ducked her head bashfully.
"You got the Sahen to leave?" Fal asked her, pointing at her with one tentacle.
"Well I did say I was Torchwood's interplanetary ambassador. It's kinda my job." Sam mumbled, scratching the back of her neck.
Fal stared at her for a second, then darted off through the grass, shouting excitedly in Ot'ik and flashing the bioluminescent patches on his body.
"Oh no, what's he doing?" Sam asked.
"Alerting those three warriors outside the ship." Jack said.
"Alright, fuck this, I'm leaving-" Owen began, starting to get up, but it was already too late. The three massive, hulking, female Lietea warriors were standing over them, their yellow-green eyes gleaming.
Fal appeared on the shoulder of the warrior on the left and murmured something into her ear. She frowned, then smiled, nodding, and tapped one of her companions on the back to relay the message to her. The middle Lietea narrowed her eyes slightly, then looked down at Sam, a grin slowly growing on her face.
Before Sam could move, the Lietea Warrior's tentacles were wrapped around her and she was pressed against her (scaly, yet surprisingly warm and soft) chest.
"Qhalzien!" She exclaimed, "thank you, Sam, and thank you, Torchwood, for defeating the Sahen!"
"I dunno about 'defeating'," Sam chuckled nervously, eyes locked on the surprisingly large and defined muscles of the Lietea's tentacles, "I just told them to go away. And they listened, after trying to kill us."
"Qhalzien!" The Lietea repeated, squeezing Sam a little tighter.
"Okay-" Sam wheezed, hoping what she had just felt crack inside her wasn't her ribs.
The Lietea finally put Sam down and raised her tentacles to the sky instead.
"Let us celebrate!" She cheered.
Jack, Ianto, Sam, and Owen all looked at each other.
Oh, this night was far from over, and it was about to get a million times more fun.
