"How are you, Doctor?"
The Doctor glanced to his right to see Sam walking up to him across the grass. He was leaned against Rose's car, which was parked under the shade of a golden night flower tree, though shade was hardly needed now that it was nighttime, with a silver full moon and thousands of twinkling stars above. The Doctor had been looking up at those stars through the leaves overhead when Sam interrupted him, joining him by the car.
"I'm not too bad, Sam," he murmured as she sat on the hood and leaned her elbow on the windshield, "what about you?"
"I'm great." Sam sighed. She turned her gaze to the stars with a radiant smile, the night breeze ruffling her golden and red hair.
"Do you ever miss being up there? Y'know, among the stars?"
"Of course. Do you?"
"Sometimes. I can't believe I was only sixteen the first time I stepped onto another planet. It still feels like yesterday, and at the same time it feels like a thousand lifetimes ago."
"Sam... what are you doing out here? I thought Jay wanted you to play the piano for everyone."
"Fingers got tired," Sam said, winking and wiggling her fingers in front of his face, "Ianto took over for me. Plus, I saw you leave the party, and I... I just wanted to make sure you're okay."
The Doctor smiled.
"I'm fantastic, Sam. Absolutely fantastic."
Sam grinned with all her teeth and gave him a playful punch on the shoulder.
"Bet you are, now that you and Rose have your own place." She teased.
"Now stop that," the Doctor said firmly, though he was trying not to laugh, "that's not funny."
"Oh c'mon, Doc, everyone knows you and Rose have been shakin' things up." Sam huffed.
"We have not!" The Doctor exclaimed indignantly as she laughed heartily. He was about to say something more, thinking that Sam hadn't changed at all since she was sixteen, when a water balloon suddenly exploded against the windshield, followed by two more.
"You had THREE SHOTS, Rhys!" Gwen's voice hissed from the nearby bushes.
"I couldn't see through the bloody flowers!" Rhys' voice responded.
"Just c'mon!" Gwen exclaimed, followed by the sound of two people running away through the garden.
"Sam, what was-?" The Doctor began.
"Not now, Doc," Sam said, pulling a super soaker from the small of her back (it was a miracle she'd been able to hide it under her suit jacket), "I'M AT WAR!!"
With that, she charged after Gwen and Rhys, leaving the Doctor to stare after her in confusion.
That was the first he'd heard of what he came to learn was called "the Couple Wars", an ongoing feud of increasingly elaborate pranks between four teams, made up of Sam and Jay, Gwen and Rhys, Jack and Ianto, and Owen and Tosh. He talked to Rose about it later that evening when the party at Sam's house was over and they were snuggled up in bed together. Rose giggled all through the story and it made the Doctor's heart flutter.
"It sounds like a lot of fun." Rose said when he'd finished.
"Really?" The Doctor asked, "fun?"
"Yeah," Rose said, "we should join in on this, I've already got a great idea for a prank!"
The Doctor sighed and she laughed again. He could already tell where this was headed.
