It was a wintry day, when LanFen had practically dragged Shuǐ ChénLín to an Inn at the outskirts of Wei province.
"We should not drink... Aren't we visiting your family tomorrow? What self-respecting lady would set foot in a tavern?" They had just finished a mission in Wei province, and were returning to Camellia City the next day.
"Eisss, the wine here is really great! And who would know I'm a lady, dressed like this?" LanFen waved her hand, and she was suddenly in her original black robes and her appearance as a man.
She spun around for good measure.
"Besides, hasn't it been a while? You won't get drunk anyway... Why the worry?"
"Is it myself I'm worried about?" Shuǐ ChénLín asked in amusement.
Still he relented, and after changing his own appearance, they both went in for a drink.
Since they would likely stay the night, Shuǐ ChénLín arranged for two rooms.
"Two rooms again?! Aren't you being far too serious?!" LanFen complained into his mind, glaring at him. "Isn't the mission over?!"
Shuǐ ChénLín had vowed not to 'do anything' during a mission.
But now, it was over, and yet...
"It's improper in this kind of place! Such a small inn, where any and everybody will hear things!" He sent her a reprimanding look, before turning to the inn keeper.
"We will drink in one of the rooms... Bring six small gourds of the wine over." Shuǐ ChénLín dropped a few pieces of silver in front of the man, who hurriedly came out to lead them upstairs.
However, one look at the warm and tiny room, and Shuǐ ChénLín instantly remembered the Six-Petal Inn.
He turned to the inn keeper. "We'll drink downstars."
LanFen laughed and laughed as they want, since she knew what he was thinking.
"Prim and Proper indeed!" She teased him, earning her a scowl.
Shuǐ ChénLín looked like he wanted to respond, but before he could, the inn keeper had reached a table.
They settled in, and he placed the wine before them...
.
Two gourds and a half later, LanFen filled her small liquor cup again, then tossed it down her throat. "Aah, such fine liquor! The last time I had it, I had to steal it!"
"Don't say such shameful things with pride!" Shuǐ ChénLín chastised her. "You're the future Shuǐ Matron! Who knows who may hear?!"
LanFen grinned at him, remembering that the last time she had had this particular liquor, was the day she and Shuǐ ChénLín had met again as adults.
Shortly before they had come to capture her, she had stolen the wine from here!
She filled another cup and was about to lift it, but ChénLín's hand covered it, holding it to the table.
"A-Liu, Aren't you forgetting something? Isn't this the third gourd?"
"Shuǐ Chén, you have it wrong! I get drunk after the fourth gourd, not the third one."
"Yes, but the last time with Lu Xian, you swore never to drink more than two gourds, didn't you? I distinctly remember it..." Shuǐ Chén said, and LanFen's own words sailed on clear seas, right into her memory:
