Logan's P.O.V

Virgil pulls up to my house. Patton and I climb out and head inside. My parents told me to grab our documents bag. A few years ago Virgil's father convinced my parents, Roman's parents and a few of our other friends' parents to have a document bag ready to go in case of emergencies. It's just a small backpack with important documents like our birth certificates and other important things. That's the first thing I grab.

The bag also has Patton's important documents. Last year Patton had to go to the doctor but his parents refused to take him. So my mother went over to his house and demanded that his parents hand over Patton's important documents so she could take him herself. She had threatened to call child protective services. The only reason she didn't was because Patton begged her not to.

I grab my old school backpack and gather a few changes of clothes. As well as my phone charger, laptop and the laptop charger.

"Make sure you grab your clothes," I call out to Patton. He's currently in the guest bedroom.

"I am," he calls back. Five minutes later we're leaving the house. We hop back into the Hummer after throwing our stuff in the back. Then we drive back to Roman's house so he can get the document bag he forgot.

After that we start to head out of the city. To do that, first we have to drive straight through it. To leave we have to make our way toward the military checkpoint at the main bridge in and out of the city. As we first approach the downtown area things seem to be normal. That is until a moment later we see people running.

The people run past our vehicle. We hear screaming coming from not too far from us. A car speeds past us. Things quickly descend into chaos. We continue to drive through the city.

"Shit," Virgil says as he pulls to a stop a few minutes later. In front of us the road is blocked. There's an accident.

"Now what?" Patton asks.

"I'm not sure," Virgil says resting his head on the steering wheel.

"Let's find a way around," I suggest.

"Yeah. Good idea," Virgil agrees. He starts to back up but the Hummer jerks to a halt.

"Please!" a woman shouts from behind the car. "I need your help!" the woman says.

"We can't help her," Virgil says before any of us can respond.

"Please! Just take my daughter! I was bitten and I've seen what happens to those who are bitten! She's still fine! Please!" the woman pleads. For a long minute no one moves.

"Fuck!" Virgil finally swears as he climbs out of the Hummer.

"Virgil!" Roman exclaims.

Virgil's P.O.V

"Please! Just take my daughter! I was bitten and I've seen what happens to those who are bitten! She's still fine! Please!" the woman pleads. I look into the rearview mirror to see a little girl around 10 years old. She looks so scared. Her eyes are screwed shut as tears run down her face. Her brown hair is in pigtails. Ignore her Virgil. But how can I?

"Fuck!" I say as I climb out of the Hummer.

"Virgil!" Roman exclaims.

"Get ready to drive Logan," I tell my friend. He looks worried but he does as I ask. He climbs out of the backseat and into the driver's seat.

"Move!" I tell her.

"No please!" the woman says. I have a hand behind my back on the pistol.

"Move or else!" I say as I pull out the pistol. "I beg of you. My name is Jolene. This is my daughter Casey. She's only 11. She hasn't been bitten or anything," the woman tells me.
