Patton's P.O.V

"Are you sure? Fucking zombies?" Kyle asks Logan after he explains what Virgil told him.

"That's what his father told him. I suppose that there's a chance that you won't turn but it's unlikely," he responds.

"Oh... Well what's our move now? I still want to go home. Can I tell my mom and sister? That way they can protect themselves if I do become like that guy," Kyle asks as Virgil enters with Roman.

"You can. But only them. Make sure they know not to tell anyone else because the Army might hurt them," Virgil tells them and they agree. I look outside and let them know that things have calmed down a bit.

"Should we head out now or wait till dark?" I ask, still looking outside. Kyle says that going out after dark could be dangerous.

"We should head out now because we don't know how long we have left to leave the city," Logan says.

Roman grabs his backpack to pack some stuff. I follow him upstairs to his room to grab some things that I think are important. He puts a couple changes of clothes inside his backpack along with his laptop, chargers and a bottle of water.

"What are you doing?" Roman asks me. I show him what's in my hand saying,

"Some pictures... One of the four of us and a more recent one with the others." He asks why I don't just get the ones from my house and I explain how my parents burnt them along with some of my other stuff. All because I forgot to clean the house.

"I'm sorry Pat," he says and I tell him it's alright. We both walk back downstairs. Virgil leaves the living room and heads to the garage. He comes back with four more baseball bats that belong to Roman's parents.

They play on a team with Virgil and Logan's parents and other adults around town. We each take one and walk outside quietly. Once we reach the sidewalk we take a left and start our journey to Kyle's house.

There are only a few hours of daylight left but we're pretty sure we can reach each of our homes before dark. However, I'm not sure if I should go to mine since I know my parents aren't there. Besides, they wouldn't care if I got out of this city anyways. Still, I don't want them to get hurt.

As we're walking I notice that the neighborhood is almost completely empty.

"Does it seem quiet to you guys?" I ask and the others nod.

"Roman? Is that you sweetie?" An older African woman in her late sixties asks from her doorway.

"Yeah Ms. Abara, it's me. I'm walking my friend home," Roman says.

"Alright but do make sure you and Virgil get back home and be careful. There's something going on in the city. I heard it on the news," she says loud enough for us all to hear as she steps out onto her porch.

"We will. Be safe Ms. Abara," he says back with a smile.

We continue on our way once Roman makes sure she gets back inside. Virgil grabs Logan's arm and tells us to go ahead, that they'll catch up. Reluctantly we walk ahead but I notice Roman seems worried. Kyle must've noticed the same thing because they ask if he's alright.

"I'm just worried about the people who can't leave here. Ms. Abara has babysat me and Virgil since we were still in diapers. She's like family and she's all alone in that house," he explains with a sad look.

He's right. There are probably hundreds of people who can't or won't leave because they don't know how dangerous it is to stay. Logan told me that we have to get out of the city because something bad might happen. I guess that there is one good thing going for us. We have a heads up thanks to Virgil's dad. Although I don't really know what's happening or why we have to leave, I trust Logan. The others too.
