Virgil's P.O.VI do my best to retrace the roads I took to leave the city. It's a bit difficult since I wasn't exactly paying attention to what roads I was taking. Eventually though I make my way to the street that I first turned down to distract the horde. I turn left and head down the street that leads to the barricade.
When I get close enough I turn around and park the Hummer just as it was before I took it. I look in the rearview mirror and see Roman, Logan, Patton and my dad. They are just standing there. I know they are waiting for me to get out. Part of me wants to just stay in here where I know I won't be faced with their worry and probably disappointment.
"Might as well get this over with," I mumble. I grab my bat, gun and the keys before climbing out.
When I'm out I tuck my gun in the back of my jeans. I also pocket the keys. Then I make my way over to the barricade. I pass by about a dozen bodies of the infected.
No one says anything until I climb over one of the cars.
"Virgil," my dad says in a tone that I can't quite place.
"Do you have any idea how worried we were Virgil?" Patton asks.
"Yeah," I say lamely in return.
"Oh really? So going off on your own and leaving everyone here to worry is something you did despite knowing?" Logan questions me.
"I'm sorry. Someone had to do something though. That horde was huge and there was even another one not far from here," I try to explain.
"None of that matters. What you did was stupid, reckless and fucking selfish," Roman says. I can tell he's trying not to blow up at me. He takes a deep breath. "When will you learn that you don't have to do everything alone?" he asks me.
I look at everyone and then look down. I knew this was coming but it still sucks.
"I understand what you were trying to do but there were better ways to have gone about it," my dad tells me.
"I know," I admit. "They were getting closer and the window to lead them away was closing. I should've at least brought Roman with me so I wasn't alone but there was the chance that I wouldn't get them all. There needed to be someone here to guard the barricade. Still, that really isn't an excuse for putting myself in danger. I'm sorry," I add. My dad walks over to me.
"At least you understand where we're coming from. I'm letting you keep the Hummer keys. Now please, for my sake and everyone else's, please don't do anything like that again. Got it?" he says as he puts a hand on my shoulder.
"Got it," I tell him.
"Alright. We'll let you two get back to guard duty," Logan says. Patton opens his mouth to probably protest but then he closes it after looking at Logan.
"Let us know if anything else happens. Both of you," Patton tells me.
"Will do, Pat," I tell him. He walks over and hugs me before he leaves. Logan puts a hand on my shoulder and squeezes. His way of telling me he's glad I'm okay. Then the two of them leave with my dad. I look at Roman who's staring out at the street.
"Roman," I say and he just glances at me before turning away again.
"Are you really mad at me?" I ask him.
"No. I'm not mad Virgil. I'm just upset. You could've gotten hurt. Or worse. I don't know what I'd do without you," he says but doesn't look at me.
"I know... It wasn't my best idea but I was worried there wouldn't be enough time. That doesn't excuse it though," I tell him.
